Defining The Perfect Man

Festival of Romance in the UK.

The Festival of Romance is a new event that will take place in October this year in Great Britain. It was created by U.K. romance author Kate Allen, and is apparently “dedicated to romantic fiction of all kinds.”  A poll was conducted to determine the attributes of the Perfect Man.

The top results(so far- compliments of Huffington Post) were:

Loyal (91%)
Honest (89%)
Personal hygiene (88%)
Kind (86%)
Sense of humour (86%)
Intelligent (85%)
Principled (81%)

The least important romantic trait, according to the poll, was “a good car.”

Poll takers were asked to agree or disagree with such statements as “Women know their best chance of finding a romantic man is between the covers of a romantic novel” (most agreed).

You can go here to take the poll yourself (They do allow those outside the UK):

Yes, the cartoon above is my sarcastic side showing or is it cynical side showing….whatever.

Sexy Man Tuesday- Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo and Conan

What is it about this barbarian that is so sexy?  I think we love Kahl Drogo because he is not only barbaric but we get to glimpse the softer, thoughtful man inside the bad boy, and his being a hunky man helps a good deal, too.

Jason Momoa plays Kahl Drogo in the HBO series “Game of Thrones” and he also stars in the recently released “Conan” movie.  I am a huge fan of the HBO series.  It is so well acted and written that the characters just suck you in and won’t let go.  George R.R. Martin, who wrote the books, must be very pleased with the way his work has been handled.  I have not read the books….I know, I’m feeling a bit guilty about it….but I am so enthralled with the show that I don’t want to confuse myself, or maybe I’m just lazy.  All I do know is that I cannot wait for the next season.  If you missed the first season you can play catch-up ( if you are an HBO subscriber) on HBOGO.com and no one is compensating me for this plug.

This last photo shows our barbarian all cleaned up in modern duds.  Still YUM!

Review-A Matter of Class by Mary Balogh

Title: A Matter of Class

Genre: Historical Romance

Author: Mary Balogh

Publisher: Vanguard Press, 2010

Source: purchase

Rating: 4 1/2- 5

Sexy Rating: 5

Description from the author’s website:

In this long novella, two strong-willed fathers who have been neighbors and enemies for thirty years, the one an arrogant earl, the other a wealthy and ambitious coal merchant, suddenly find themselves agreed upon one thing—that their son and daughter should marry each other. Reggie Mason and Lady Annabelle Ashton are powerless to say no, but they are not going to pretend to like the situation in which they find themselves—or each other.

**************

I have a TBR (to be read) pile that approaches hoarder capacity but I still saw this on my Keeper Shelf and had to read it again.  Can I have a favorite romance book?  If it is allowed, then this is it.  There is a delicious story here and a wonderfully written one at that.  It is not a long book, only 190 pages.  But the author’s artistry is such that she tells a complete story in those few pages.

This book is the most perfectly written Historical Romance that I have read to date; characters are fully developed, plot is seamlessly constructed, the romance is beautiful.  And it can be devoured in a day at the beach or pool. (bring sunblock)

Extra! Storm passing update

The rain started around midnight and just now the rain and winds are past us heading north to Albany NY. We can expect periods of rain on the backside of the storm. It has been pretty much a non event for us. Some gusty winds. Power is holding. Ground is saturated so we do still keep an eye on trees coming down. I’m gonna hunker down with a good book. No need to cook, I made enough for three days. Yay!

Extra! Deet’s Ready for Irene

For all of you dear people who have shown concern for us with the impending hurricaine, let me assure you that we will be safe. We are on high ground and have been diligent in getting the house and yard hurricaine-ready. I have been cooking up some meals to keep in our ice chest in case the power goes out. So you see all that is left is to have a hurricaine party.

We are due to get hit with 5″ of rain and 55mph winds in the best case scenerio on Sunday afternoon, so actually we are hoping for that. We surely don’t want the worse case which will be 7″ of rain and 75 mph winds. I will post an update tomorrow (Sunday) as long as we have power.

Review-The Pursuit of Pleasure by Elizabeth Essex

Title: The Pursuit of Pleasure

Genre: Historical Romance

Author: Elizabeth Essex

Pub: Kensington Books, 2010

Source: Free Kindle (no longer free)

Rating: 4

Sexy Rating: 5

Lizzie does not want a husband but wouldn’t mind being a widow.  Jamie overhears this and proceeds to proposition her to marry him and she will have all the benefits of widow-hood because he is in the Navy and will be away for 8 years.  They marry and have a very erotic wedding night and then he is off on his   naval mission.  From here the story unfolds with much mystery and suspense.  Lizzie being willful, Jamie being gone.

I found this story to be a refreshing change from the usual Regency romances.  There was danger, mystery, suspense and unexpected developments abounding.  Lizzie did seem a bit too willful and then a bit too eager to give in.  Jamie was a cad and she seemed to forgive him a bit too quickly considering her anger.  Still, it was a very good read.

Deet’s Life- FOOD-Deet’s Eats

I have compiled a cookbook.  Most of the recipes are from family and friends and a few I have devised all by myself.  I like to cook.  Not so much these days but I will cook anything if it means I don’t have to go out and eat the awful things they are serving in my local restaurants at ungodly high prices.  If those of you have fabulous eating joints, then consider yourselves very lucky.

My cookbook is titled; DEET’S EATS: a compendium of stolen recipes, I wrote it about 10 years ago and I have updated it with new recipes often.  The major and only requirement, of the book, was that the recipes be delicious.  I don’t worry about fat grams or calories per se, but some of my recipes are very diet friendly….some… not at all.  They are not stolen, “borrowed” is more like it.

This is what I’m making for dinner tonight.  I like this recipe because it can be put together early, left in the fridge, and then popped in the oven to cook for two hours while I devour another novel.  And it is yummy. Tonight I’m serving it with mashed potatoes, Broccoli/Cauliflower/carrot mix, green salad and a glass or two of red wine.

Deet’s Swiss Bliss (seves 4-6)

2 pounds boneless beef chuck steak (or top round steak)

1 envelope onion soup mix( use Lipton or Mrs. Grass)

4 oz can sliced mushrooms, drained

½ green pepper sliced

15 oz can whole or diced tomatoes, drained reserving ½ cup liquid

1 T Worcestershire sauce

2 T cornstarch

Pepper to taste( no salt is needed there is plenty in the soup mix)

Cut steak into serving size pieces and arrange slightly overlapping in the center of a LONG piece of aluminum foil, sprayed with PAM, on a cookie sheet.(or a 9×12” pan) (don’t forget to turn up edges slightly to contain the liquid while you are putting this together)

Sprinkle over the meat: onion soup mix, then mushrooms, green peppers, drained tomatoes, pepper.

Mix ½ cup liquid from tomatoes with the Worcestershire and the cornstarch until smooth.  Pour over the veggies.

Seal the foil into a packet on top and sides.  Bake for 2 hours at 350 degrees.

Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.  The gravy is delicious.

Review- It’s In His Kiss (Bridgerton Series Book #7)by Julia Quinn

Title: It’s In His Kiss (Bridgerton Series Book #7)

Genre: Historical Romance

Author: Julia Quinn

Pub: 2005 Avon books

Source: Library

Rating: 4

Sexy rating:  5

The Bridgerton Series ( H or h)

  1. The Duke and I (Daphine)
  2. The Viscount Who Loved Me (Anthony)
  3. An Offer From A Gentleman (Benedict)
  4. Romancing Mr. Bridgerton (Colin)
  5. To Sir Phillip With Love (Eloise)
  6. When He was wicked (Francesca)]
  7. It’s IN His Kiss (Hyacinth)
  8. On The Way To The Wedding (Gregory)

I have to confess to reading this series out of order but you probably have guessed that by now.  It is not how I like to approach a series but I have been reading these from the library and taking what I can get.  So far I have read #’s 1, 2, 4, 6, 7&8.  I did have to purchase a few but #3&5 are still eluding me.   I will try my darndest to find the others because I love the Bridgerton family. So far, out-of-order has not impacted my enjoyment of these books.  Each does stand alone.  Some have been recent reads and others I read back at the beginning of the year.

This installment is about the romance of the youngest Bridgerton, Hyacinth.  Her mother, Violet, is starting to worry that she is being far too selective when it comes to choosing a husband.  Of course Hyacinth disagrees and is looking for just the perfect match.

Gareth St. Clair is a second son of a Baron.  His  father has nothing but disgust for him.  We learn about the lifelong animosity that Gareth has had to endure and the reasons why.  This upbringing has turned Gareth into a rogue and a rake but Hyacinth sees him for the true gentleman that he is.

There is a mystery that these two try to unravel and it brings them closer to true romance.

Once again Julia Quinn has enthralled me with another episode of the Bridgerton Saga.  She is a master at keeping the reader turning pages into the wee hours with no hope of sleep until we know what will happen.  We care about her characters and feel we know them intimately.  We ache for them and we cheer for their triumphs.  We fall in love when they fall in love. The romance is lovely and the sex is sizzling.  Mmm, yummy!

Sexy Man Tuesday- Jensen Ackles

I know, I know… I’ve been saying I would try and keep celebs out of “Sexy Man” day but some celebs just seem to appear here almost like I can’t control them.  So-o-o-o…. Jensen Ackles is one of them who just jumped from his role as Dean Winchester on the TV show SUPERNATURAL to Sexy Man Tuesday.  What can I say….he fits the title.

Video by Smirkygirl who says: “Shameless Dean-as-Eye-Candy video set to ‘Breathe On Me’ by Britney Spears (cause honestly, isn’t that all he’d have to do?)”
