30,000 books were made into an 82 foot tower in May of 2011. It was officially known as the “Tower of Babel” designed by Argentinean artist Marta Minujin. The occasion was the celebration of Buenos Aires being designated as the 2011 World Book Capital by UNESCO, the United Nations organization.

The books were donated by libraries and embassies. Each book was wrapped in plastic to protect it from the elements. At the end of the month long installation some visitors were allowed to take home a book. The remainder were donated to a new book archive called the “Library of Babel”.
