Description from

Raphael—powerful, extraordinary, arrogant. He’s been eliminating rivals and gathering allies, determined not just to survive, but to demolish the Europeans who think they can steal what he’s worked for centuries to create. In a final bid to avert a war that seems inevitable, Raphael agrees to meet an enemy he knows of old. She is formidable, wily, and not to be trusted. But in his arrogance, Raphael believes he can foil whatever treachery she has brewing.

Cynthia Leighton—Raphael’s human mate, beautiful, smart, and deadly when threatened. She doesn’t trust anyone, much less a powerful vampire claiming to want peace. So while Raphael prepares to negotiate a treaty, Cyn is preparing for the inevitable double-cross that she knows is coming. Raphael worries about saving thousands of vampire lives. She only cares about one, and she will do anything to keep him alive and in her arms. When Cyn is proven right, when it all falls apart and Raphael’s enemies draw on ancient magic to trap him, taking him away from Cyn and out of the war, it all falls to her—to find Raphael, to save the thousands of vampires who will die if she doesn’t succeed . . . and to kill every single being, human or vampire, who gets in her way.

Here we are at book #9 of this great series and you might think that there is nothing new under the dark night of Vampires In America.  Oh you of little faith!  D.B. Reynolds has upped the excitement and interest with this wildly innovative novel featuring the all too human abilities of Cyn.  She is ubber smart and she has an inner strength that will sustain her in a fight for Raphael’s life. She is human enough to realize she needs help in rescuing Raphael and she relies on both human and vampire help.  There is also a really big surprise in help that is offered from an unexpected source.  (No spoilers here, but series readers will love this.) Did I mention that the sizzling sex factor in this book is reaching the combustible stage? It is a wonder my Kindle didn’t burn up.

This book is the start of a new direction for the series, The Vampire Wars.  European Vampires are looking to expand their territories and have eyed the Americas as their next conquest.  The Vampire Lords in America are readying for the battles to come. In this book the battle starts.

Vampies in A-Territory-Map

I love this series!  This book is a wonderful addition to the series.  Cynthia Leighton, Raphael’s mate, has always held her own in a fight but now she choreographs the action and holds her own in the world of vicious vampires.

D.B. Reynolds has developed these two characters so that they breathe life into the world of Vampires in America.  Her vampires are violent, sexy, loyal, political, and wealthy and trying to hold onto what is theirs in a world populated by humans who know of them but keep their distance.

I suggest that you start this series with book #1 & #2, RAPHAEL and JABRIL.  This book #9 can be read as a standalone but you will get much more if you start from the beginning.  This book releases on March 31, 2015, that’s next Tuesday, but you can preorder it right now.  Go for it! Then come back and say “Thank you, Deet”.

Great review—I was planning on reading it, no doubt about that but this has me counting the days. Saving Raphael falling on Cyn’s shoulders . . . .this will be very interesting, especially seeinng how and who could possibly bring Raphael down in the first place! And a surprise?? I love surprises! Do we finally get to meet “Juro’s brother” (He who has never been named)? I wondering about the logistics of setting this in Hawaii . . . But I trust DBR to deliver. She has never let me down!
