A devil’s bargain

Easily the shyest Wallflower, Evangeline Jenner stands to become the wealthiest, once her inheritance comes due. Because she must first escape the clutches of her unscrupulous relatives, Evie has approached the rake Viscount St. Vincent with a most outrageous proposition: marriage!

Sebastian’s reputation is so dangerous that thirty seconds alone with him will ruin any maiden’s good name. Still, this bewitching chit appeared, unchaperoned, on his doorstep to offer her hand. Certainly an aristocrat with a fine eye for beauty could do far worse.

But Evie’s proposal comes with a condition: no lovemaking after their wedding night. She will never become just another of the dashing libertine’s callously discarded broken hearts — which means Sebastian will simply have to work harder at his seductions…or perhaps surrender his own heart for the very first time in the name of true love.

This the third book in The Wallflower Series is Evie’s story, one of the four young women who were wallflowers during their husband-hunting seasons in London. She is the shy one, with a self-conscious stutter who tries to fade into the background at most society functions. She is also abused by her extended family and kept from visiting her dying father, a prominent gambling hall owner. Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent, is an unrepentant rake who is in dire need of money. Evie is also desperate to get away from her abusive family andcomes to him with a proposition he can’t refuse. “Marry me.” And he does.

For many readers this book in the series is their favorite. I tend to like all of the books with over the top fan-girl squees. Yes, I did just say that. This book like the others has a supremely sensuous romance, beautifully crafted love scenes and characters that the reader falls in love with. That Ms. Kleypas can redeem this rogue of an aristocrat is nothing short of a miracle. This entire series is splendidly entertaining and I do suggest that the reader start at the beginning with SECRETS OF A SUMMER NIGHT (or the unofficial prequel AGAIN THE MAGIC). However, this is a standalone novel but so much will be added to the readers enjoyment if the entire series is read in order.

  2. I can think of only one other redemption story that comes up to this one and that’s Charming Mickey in Elizabeth Hoyt’s Scandalous Desires.

  3. I was so in love with this book! Actually, the whole series, I mean to reread them sometime. As much as I have my favorite historical romance authors, I think no one writes beautiful stories much like Lisa Kleypas.
