Description from Amazon.com:

ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE Battlefields and barrooms hold much more interest for Edward Westover, Duke of Swarthmore, than a little girl’s fondness for dolls and lace. When he takes possession of his enemy’s estate, everything that villain held dear-including his daughter-belongs to Edward. Hire a governess, arrange a dowry, give a few reassurances, and be off on his way-that’s Edward’s plan. But he’s in for the shock of his life. For his new ward is a beautiful, impetuous, and utterly irresistible woman . . . . . . AND WAR Kate Benton is stunned. Who is this arrogant, infuriating man who’s invited himself into her home and taken over her life? Her vow: to do everything in her power to convince him to leave her-and Brambly House-alone. Yet as chilly days melt into sultry nights, Kate sees glimpses of kindness underneath Edward’s cool façade . . . and a passionate nature that takes her breath away. There’s so much she doesn’t know about this man. But does she dare trust this devilish duke with her heart?

**

Romance fans rejoice!!! There is a new Romance Writing Diva on deck.  Anna Harrington has given us a five star read and it is such a welcome to my winter reading.  She can plot, she can bring characters to 3-dimensional life, her sensuous passages are poetry and she does all this in a can’t-put-down book.

Kate is a sweet, naïve country woman who is physician to the village that has no official doctor.  She likes her life even though she is desperately in need of money. Edward descends on her farm after ruining her father for reasons of his own and has guardianship of Kate.  This is a source of bickering, arguments but underneath is an undeniable attraction. Both of our protagonists have major trust issues that threaten to tear them apart.

The romance is breathtaking and so well written. This book is going on Deet’s Best of 2015 list!

P.S.- The next book in the series centers on Nathaniel Grey, a spy and a Rake, whom we are introduced to in this book. I can’t wait!!!

Description from Amazon.com:

SHE’S TAKING CHARGE Prim, proper, and thrifty, Eve Dinwoody is all business when it comes to protecting her brother’s investment. But when she agrees to control the purse strings of London’s premier pleasure garden, Harte’s Folly, she finds herself butting heads with an infuriating scoundrel who can’t be controlled.

HE’S RUNNING THE SHOW Bawdy and bold, Asa Makepeace doesn’t have time for a penny-pinching prude like Eve. As the garden’s larger-than-life owner, he’s already dealing with self-centered sopranos and temperamental tenors. He’s not about to let an aristocratic woman boss him around . . . no matter how enticing she is.

BUT LOVE CONQUERS ALL In spite of her lack of theatrical experience-and her fiery clashes with Asa-Eve is determined to turn Harte’s Folly into a smashing success. But the harder she tries to manage the stubborn rake, the harder it is to ignore his seductive charm and raw magnetism. There’s no denying the smoldering fire between them-and trying to put it out would be the greatest folly of all . . .

**

Another delightful addition to the Maiden Lane series.  Eve Dinwoody has a secret in her past that still causes her anxiety.  Asa Makepeace has a past that is also fraught with problems and a present that continues with problems.  Problems that may cause his death or Eve’s death.  She is a sheltered woman and he is a rogue businessman.  Two who are polar opposites.

Hoyt always gives us a gritty interpretation of the Georgian era in Britain. This series delves into the dark side of the era with erotic images and nefarious characters; always well written.  With bigger than life heroes such as Asa and realistic heroines such as Eve, two troubled characters who find love with each other. The love scenes are definitely erotic.  The side characters, human and animal, are well drawn and add to the plot. The sprinkling of characters from previous books is welcome and adds a sense of family to the plot.

I highly recommend this book as a standalone novel but I also suggest you treat yourself to this wonderfully written series.

Review- The Perfect Rake by Anne Gracie

Title:  The Perfect Rake (Merridew Series, book #1)

The Perfect Rake

Genre: Regency Historical Romance

Author: Anne Gracie

Publisher: Berkley, 2005

Pages: 372

Source: purchase

Rating: 4.5

Sexy Rating: 5

Description from Amazon.com:

She ran from a brute… Fleeing the harsh guardianship of her grandfather, Prudence Merridew escapes with her beautiful younger sisters to London. One of them must marry—and fast. To act as her sisters’ chaperone, Prudence invents a secret engagement to a reclusive duke… But when the duke arrives unexpectedly in London, she needs his help to avert disaster.

…into the arms of a rake Aristocratic Gideon, handsome, rakish and with a strong frivolous streak, casually hijacks Prudence’s game, awarding himself a stolen kiss or three along the way. Used to managing sisters and elderly men, Prudence is completely out of her depth with a charming, devious and utterly irresistible rake. And her plot goes terribly—if deliciously—awry…

**

I was in need of a good laugh and a well written book and fellow blogger Sonya came up with a recommendation at just the right moment.

This is a very funny mistaken identity trope that evolves into instant attraction. But Prudence is betrothed to Phillip who has been in India for 4 ½ years. Prudence is not the type of woman to set aside a promise made. Gideon, is a true rake but he has fallen in love at first sight and is determined to win over Prudence.

I laughed, because the banter is hold-your-tummy funny. The Grandfather is so diabolically evil that we know Pru and her sisters need the protection Gideon and his cousin, the Duke, can offer. The character development is spot on. The plot is well written. My only criticism is that I felt it a bit too long. This is my first read of a book by Ms. Gracie who has written many romance novels. And I assure you it will not be my last.

Thanks to Sonya for the recommendation!

Description from Amazon.com:

They want him dead and her enslaved . . . Texas . . . the heart of a territory that stretches from the golden deserts of New Mexico to the turquoise shores of the Florida Keys. It’s big, it’s rich, and it’s the next battleground for some of the most dangerous vampires in the world. Christian Duvall . . . charismatic and powerful, and determined to claim the South as his own. But with old enemies and new fighting to stop him, victory suddenly takes on a brutal, and far more treacherous, edge. Because what one of his enemies wants more than anything else already belongs to Christian . . . and her name is Natalie. Natalie Vivant Gaudet . . . brilliant and lovely, a strong Southern woman who can unravel the most intricate financial schemes designed to swindle and steal. She loves her complex job and the simplicity of her life. And then she meets Christian. He’s beautiful, he’s complicated, and she’ll fight to keep him alive. With allies trying to kill him, and enemies readying a horde of zombie vampires to roll over all of Texas, it will take every shred of Christian’s power and Natalie’s determination to win this war and give North America a brand new Lord of the South.

**

We are introduced to Christian, a powerful vampire from France, who approaches the vampire lord of the West, Raphael, with a request to be included in the challenge for the territory of the South in the USA. Christian needs the tacit approval from Raphael who is deemed the unofficial but esteemed leader of the Vampires in America.  Christian travels to Houston to meet with retiring Lord Anthony and there meets and has an instant attraction with Anthony’s forensic Accountant Natalie.  The attraction is mutual but Anthony is jealous.  There is another European Master Vampire who is making efforts to foil all of Christian’s plans to take over the South.

Some series start to slow down and become redundant with so many books, not this series.  The Vampire Wars, a continuation of the Vampires In America series, started with Reynold’s book #9 DECEPTION and with CHRISTIAN (book #10) we find the series ramping up the intrigue, thrills and more vampire power-plays.  The romance is sensual, lusty and loving.  Christian is a bit kinky and there may be a ménage a trois in Natalie’s future.  Not such a bad thing to look forward to with Christian and his hunky lieutenant Marc Forest.  The introduction of the vampire zombies gave heart pounding action as the fate of our heroes was in doubt. The demonstration of Christian’s power was breathtaking.

This is part of a series but can be read as a standalone novel because Reynold’s is adept at weaving background information throughout the plot.

This series is at the top of my list for fabulous Paranormal Romance with plenty of action, thrills and hot sexy Vampires. No sparkles here but plenty of charisma.

Description from Amazon.com:

Her captor. Her Savior. And her temptation…

London, 1814

Lady Jane Langley values logic and reason over passion and emotion. Her intellect has given her value in the eyes of both her father and society. Logic gives way to terrible, icy fear when Jane finds herself in a devastating carriage accident… an accident in which she is helpless to do anything but watch as her aristocratic companion is murdered.

But this was no mere accident. This was an assassination. Spy and grandson of Lord Landsdowne, Gerard Badeau is methodic in his dark, shadowy work, knowing that any display of emotion could get him killed. Something about the mysterious woman and her cool blue eyes stays Gerard’s lethal hand. Now he has both a witness and a hostage.

And if he doesn’t kill Lady Jane Langley, he risks a fate that is far, far worse…falling in love with her.

**

After reading the description and knowing this is a romance novel it is for-sure he falls for her.  But in the beginning we wonder if her attraction to him isn’t a bit of Stockholm Syndrome because she is kidnapped, injured and totally dependent on him. Gerard does become obsessed with marrying Jane and Jane’s reluctance and turnaround is a bit too slick.  The ending made me a bit angry with our heroine.  But the fact that I had so many emotions is a credit to the superb writing found here. It is all a lovely, well written romance with lots of intrigue and delicious sex.   I’m so glad I took a chance on this new-to-me author.

Christmasy Feeling: 3

Description from Amazon.com:

She is theirs to claim. They are hers to save.

Love Bites, Book 1

Zoey Blake is about as far down on her luck as she can get. A car crash took her parents, leaving her destitute and on the street. When she’s attacked by another homeless person, her lifeblood drains away as her fading vision is filled with the face of a handsome stranger.

Ian Kennedy, a century old Irish vampire, never could resist rescuing a stray. As a few drops of his blood heals Zoey’s wounds, he realizes she’s a sweet, tempting, flesh-and-blood woman. But there’s one problem. Connor, who made Ian promise decades ago: no more mortal lovers.

After another vampire murdered his soulmate, Connor O’Shea swore never to let a mortal woman pay the price for loving him. Until he feels Zoey’s skin and tastes her lips. She makes him want to break that vow.

Zoey finds herself caught in their web of seduction. But as Christmas draws near and her grief deepens, happiness seems far out of reach. And Ian and Connor join forces to prove their love is sacred, special…and forever.

Warning: This book contains two scorching-hot Irish vampires, one lady with plenty of pluck but zero luck, naughty lingerie, and enough Christmas cheer to redeem even the darkest creatures.

**

This novella is the first book in a new vampire series by Lauren Smith.  There is little romance and a plethora of lust.  Zoey really has nothing to lose by hooking up with two gorgeous vampires since it will either redeem her pitiful life or end it.  The two vampires, Connor and Ian, are handsome, hunky, good guys who just happen to live off the blood of humans.  It is a win/win for all three protagonists.  I was not put off by this book but I found the instant attractions unsatisfying.  The Christmas feeling is minimal.  I can recommend this book to those who are fans of gorgeous, sexy vampires and want a quick read.  Don’t expect a Kick A&& heroine.

Description from Amazon.com:

Milla McKool has been dumped by her French boyfriend after five years, losing her chance at love, her rising star status as an executive chef, and Paris. Back in NYC, she’s stuck with a dead-end job, an amaretto addiction to make herself sleep at night, and a decidedly jaundiced view of all mankind. The only cure, according to her best friend, is to get back out there. Hunter Rossdale has been stuck in neutral for even longer. The handsome, successful investment banker meets his match in Milla, a woman who no longer believes in happy-ever-after. She’s just looking for happy-for-now. Hunter doesn’t know what’s hit him, but he’s interested. What man hasn’t dreamed of a sexy woman who’s after him just for sex, no strings attached? But along with some dubious help from Hunter’s brother—a workaholic physician with his own romance woes—Milla’s sous-chef, who has no moral compass to speak of, and a nymphomaniac Russian psychic, the couple finds love isn’t always predictable. Sometimes your destiny is waiting.

**

This is a well written contemporary romance.  The characters are all well developed and side stories do not take the reader out of the main plot but help to characterize the H/h.  It is refreshing to find a heroine who is not especially fond of dogs since that seems to be politically incorrect in contemporary romance.  Of course,(SPOILER) she comes around to tolerating and attaching to said dog by the end of the book. Milla falls in lust with Hunter and it was fun to have a predatory heroine instead of the usual male being the one to do all the seducing.

Both Milla and Hunter are immersed in the lives of their best friends which leads to chaos in their personal relationship. Hunter is also very much involved in his brother’s marriage.  Because of all this outside involvement they might go for days without seeing each other.  But it was fireworks when they finally got together.

This is Ms. Sanders first novel and a well done one at that.  I recommend this book to all romance readers for a fun happily-ever-after read.

Description from Amazon.com:

Lady Sara Emerson was jolted out of her dull provincial life by her cousin’s murder. Now that the killer seems to be targeting her, Sara seeks help from the man who was once her cousin’s fiancé, Gabriel Ferguson, Duke of Rossmoyne. With his towering frame and fiery personality, Ross cuts an intimidating figure. Living under his protection, however, has its own hazards—like the sudden urge Sara feels to take their relationship in new, exquisitely inappropriate directions.   Dazzled by the social graces of his betrothed, Ross never noticed her shy, blushing cousin. Looking at Sara now, though, he’s drawn to her lovely eyes and calm disposition. Funny how a year away from the hustle and bustle of the ton changes a man. But Ross has no intention of allowing a woman to interfere with his plan to return overseas. He will simply capture the murderer and set sail once again. The problem is, with her beguiling lips and heavenly touch, Sara makes him never want to leave home—or his bed—again.

**

Sara has received several letters from an anonymous sender.  They are not threatening but they are not bland either, they ask her to remember her murdered cousin.  They are strange enough that Sara is frightened and seeks help from Ross, the Duke of Rossmoyne, who was her cousins betrothed before the murder.  Ross insists that she stay with him in his mansion along with Ross’ mother as chaperone.  Even chaperoned the two find time to be alone and their attraction blooms.

This is a well written romance.  There is an attraction between Sara and Ross that causes fireworks whenever they are alone.   The side characters are well drawn and their actions move the story along. This is my first book by Ms. Cullen.  I enjoyed the mystery and the romance.
