Description from Amazon:

Adam Fairfax, the Duke of Sunderford, happily enjoys a different woman (or two) every night—or he did, until his wards landed on his doorstep. Ever since Sunny took in the seven-year-old twin girls and their prim and proper governess, Isabel Finch, his love life has been a shambles. But, as time goes by, Sunny catches himself getting lost in Isabel’s haughty blue eyes, or following the curves beneath her unbecoming dress. An unexpected kiss ignites a passion that shocks him into realizing how thin the line between love and hate can be.

If Isabel’s hidden past were revealed, she could lose everything. Oddly enough, only when “Sinful Sunny” is near does she feel safe—or safe enough to speak up in defense of the girls. The duke’s decadent lifestyle is a disgrace, and clearly he considers Isabel a nuisance. Still, she can’t help admiring his sculpted cheekbones, strong-cut jaw, and tousled chestnut hair. When their lips meet, it’s almost as if he could kiss the secrets right out of her. Worse, she’s tempted to let him. . . .

**
This book is pretty formulaic to start; Dissipated, haughty Duke, forced to be guardian of young girls, is constantly bickering with their governess. The plain governess is only interested in her charges safety and morality. Then the two find they are attracted to each other. We’ve read this story line before but in the hands of Diana Quincy it becomes something new and very interesting. There are passionate moments and rage filled misunderstandings that all lead to a surprising Happily Ever After.

Side Characters from previous books are involved in the plot but this is definitely readable as a standalone. I enjoyed this Regency romance and can sincerely recommend it to Historical Romance readers.

5-Star Review- Hot In Hellcat Canyon by Julie Anne Long

Hot in Hellcat Canyon

Title: Hot in Hellcat Canyon ( A Hellcat Canyon Novel, Book #1)
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Author: Julie Anne Long
Source: Purchase, currently $1.99 for Kindle at Amazon
Publisher: Avon, 2016
Pages: 387
Rating: 5
Sexy rating: 5
Violence rating: 4
Description from Amazon:

A broken truck, a broken career, and a breakup heard around the world land superstar John Tennessee McCord in Hellcat Canyon. Legend has it that hearts come in two colors there: gold or black. And that you can find whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s love . . . or trouble. JT may have found both in waitress Britt Langley.
His looks might cause whiplash and weak knees, but Britt sees past JT’s rough edge and sexy drawl to a person a lot like her: in need of the kind of comfort best given hot and quick, with clothes off and the lights out.
Her wit is sharp but her eyes and heart—not to mention the rest of her—are soft, and JT is falling hard. But Britt has a secret as dark as the hills, and JT’s past is poised to invade their present. It’s up to the people of Hellcat Canyon to help make sure their future includes a happily ever after .
**
This book has everything I want in a Contemporary Romance; witty banter, realistic dialog, superbly nuanced characters, laugh out loud moments and sizzling sexual tension. The H/h are so well drawn that they become real people who we get to know and care about. If you have ever lived in a small town then the Misty Cat Cavern restaurant, where side character, Glenn, makes the best burgers, will be immediately recognizable. Shy Glory and Sheriff Eli will have their romance in the next book in the series. There is some stubbornness by Britt that tears apart J.T.’s heart and threatens their romance. I guarantee you will fall in love with this book and probably J.T. will be your forever book boyfriend.
This is not a recent book but it has been recently on sale at Amazon, the next two in the series are also on sale. I am a huge fan of this author’s Historical Romance, Pennyroyal Green Series and was reluctant to jump ship into this Contemporary Romance genre but now I’m hooked on this Hellcat Canyon Series and cannot wait to read the rest of the books. Lucky for us, there are 3 books already published with another coming very soon. These prices may not last long.
The Hellcat Canyon Series:
1. Hot In Hellcat Canyon (right now $1.99, Kindle)
2. Wild At Whiskey Creek ($1.99)
3. Dirty Dancing At Devil’s Leap ($2.99)
4. The First Time At Firelight Falls (preorder,$6.99)

Advance Review- The Duke Of Ruin by Darcy Burke

The Duke of Ruin

Title: The Duke of Ruin (The Untouchables, book #8)
Genre: Historical Romance/Regency
Author: Darcy Burke
Source: Free for review from the publisher
Publisher: Darcy Burke Publishing, March 27, 2018 (preorder available)
Pages: ?, e-book
Rating: 4
Sexy rating: 5
Violence rating: 0
Description from Amazon:
With her betrothal to a duke in tatters and scandal imminent, Diana Kingman has two choices: live in certain ignominy or flee into obscurity. Diana wants solitude. She never wished to wed in the first place. However, her father will stop at nothing to betroth her to one of the finest titles in the realm…no matter how loathsome the bearer. Escape is Diana’s only option, and she’ll pay any price to achieve freedom.

Universally blamed for the death of his wife and unborn child, Simon Hastings doesn’t dispute his guilt over an accident he cannot even remember. He hasn’t had a drink since, nor a moment’s peace. Determined to be a better man, Simon rescues a young woman in need—only to be accused of kidnapping. They must marry to save him from prison. But how can a man haunted by the love he lost and a woman afraid to get too close find happiness together?

**
I do wish that the person who writes the description blurb for the book would read it first. Diana’s father is a cruel man who abused her throughout her childhood and into her young adulthood. He most definitely wants her to be betrothed to a “decent” duke and would be appalled at any suggestion she marry a duke who is “loathsome”. Diana needs to escape because she is breaking her betrothal to the Duke of Kilve because he loves another, and her father will be outraged and punish her severely.

Along comes Simon, Duke of Romsey, Kilve’s best friend. Simon is called the Duke of Ruin by society because he is believed to have murdered his wife. He agrees to help Diana runaway to her cousin’s in order for her to figure out her future. He does this because of Kilve’s guilt over the broken betrothal. He is not interested in marrying and he is distraught over his wife’s death, which he can’t remember because he was drunk at the time.

This road-trip trope is entertaining and well written. It is a standalone book although we were introduced to Simon and Diana in Kilve’s book, THE DUKE OF ICE, so it was nice to see them hoping for their own HEA. I can recommend this book to ALL romance readers for a most enjoyable read. You may also want to read the other books in the Untouchable series.

The Untouchables Series:

#1 – The Forbidden Duke
#2 – The Duke of Daring
#3 – The Duke of Deception
#4 – The Duke of Desire
#5 – The Duke of Defiance
#6 – The Duke of Danger
#7 – The Duke of Ice
#8 – The Duke of Ruin
#9 – The Duke of Lies
#10 – Coming soon!

Release Day Review- I Wrote This Book Because I Love You by Tim Kreider

I wrote this Book because I love you

Title: I Wrote This Book Because I Love You: Essays
Genre: Nonfiction Essays
Author: Tim Kreider
Source: Free for review from the publisher
Publisher: Simon and Schuster, Feb. 6, 2018
Pages: 224
Rating: 5
Sexy rating: 0
Violence rating: 0
Description from Amazon:

Psychologists have told him he’s a psychologist. Philosophers have told him he’s a philosopher. Religious groups have invited him to speak. He had a cult following as a cartoonist. But, above all else, Tim Kreider is an essayist—one whose deft prose, uncanny observations, dark humor, and emotional vulnerability have earned him deserved comparisons to David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell, and the late David Foster Wallace (who was himself a fan of Kreider’s humor).

In his new collection, I Wrote This Book Because I Love You, he focuses his unique perception and wit on his relationships with women—romantic, platonic, and the murky in-between. He talks about his difficulty finding lasting love, and seeks to understand his commitment issues by tracking down the John Hopkins psychologist who tested him for a groundbreaking study on attachment when he was a toddler. He talks about his valued female friendships, one of which landed him on a circus train bound for Mexico. He talks about his time teaching young women at an upstate New York college, and the profound lessons they wound up teaching him. And in a hugely popular essay that originally appeared in The New York Times, he talks about his nineteen-year-old cat, wondering if it’s the most enduring relationship he’ll ever have.

Each of these pieces is hilarious and profound, and collectively they further cement Kreider’s place among the best essayists working today.

**
You may wonder after reading the book description if I would have anything new to say about the book. The answer is, not really. I agree that this book is profound and hilarious and Tim Kreider has lived a most interesting life with his romantic and platonic relationships. Each essay gave insight into this man’s thinking but he also touched most frequently on universal truths of human relationships; observations we can all relate to our own lives. The women in his life were all different with some strong similarities. They were smart and adventurous. No shrinking violets here. I highly recommend this book!

( A really horrible cover!!)

Review-Devil’s Bargain by Jade Lee

Devil's Bargain

Title: Devil’s Bargain (The Regency Rags To Riches Series, #2)

Genre: Historical romance/Erotic

Author: Jade Lee

Publisher: ePublishing works, Oct. 2012

Source: purchase (Kindle, $.99)

Pages: 300

Rating: 4

Sexy Rating: 5+

Violence Rating: 0

Description from Amazon.com:

A penniless relation, thanks to the sudden death of her father, Lynette resigns to the inevitable: selling herself into marriage. But to whom?

Viscount Marlock—a carnal, unrepentant, dark-devil of a man—has offered to arrange a profitable match. But for a price. The Viscount commits to teach her all she must know about ensnaring a man—using touch and tongue—opening her to the pleasures of the flesh. In turn, she must obey without question, trusting his whispered promises.

But who will be caught, and who will be saved?

***

The fact that Jade Lee can make us eventually want Adrian and Lynette to have a happily-ever-after is due to her skill as an author.  This is a sordid story but we are made to see the humanity in each of the characters.  Both Lynette and Adrian had much to lose by not completing the agreed upon contract. Only by a serendipitous happening could this conundrum be solved.

I liked this book in spite of my dislike of Adrian, who was acting the pimp.  It is super sexy. Written with in-depth characterization. Side characters, although few, are well developed and add to the narrative. Although book #2 in the series it is definitely a standalone book.  At this writing it is e-book only, with a giveaway price of $.99 on Amazon. I highly recommend this book to all Jade Lee fans, and those who like very sexy stories, you won’t be sorry.

Recent Release Review- Twas The Night Before Scandal by Christi Caldwell and Eva Devon

Publisher: Christi Caldwell Inc., Nov. 2016

Descriptions from Amazon.com:

“Only For Their Love” by Christi Caldwell Miss Carol Cresswall bore witness to her parents’ loveless union and is determined to avoid that same miserable fate. Her mother has altogether different plans—plans that include a match between Carol and Lord Gregory Renshaw. Despite his wealth and power, Carol has no interest in marrying a pompous man who goes out of his way to ignore her. Now, with their families coming together for the Christmastide season it’s her mother’s last-ditch effort to get them together. And Carol plans to avoid Gregory at all costs. Lord Gregory Renshaw has no intentions of falling prey to his mother’s schemes to marry him off to a proper debutante she’s picked out. Over the years, he has carefully sidestepped all endeavors to be matched with any of the grasping ladies. But a sudden Christmastide Scandal has the potential show Carol and Gregory that they’ve spent years running from the one thing they’ve always needed.

***

The more I read from Christi Caldwell the more I like.  This novella is just packed with romance, Christmas feeling and even a surly Dowager Duchess and unrelenting matchmaking mother.  It is an enemies to sweethearts trope that is well developed considering the brevity of the format of the novella. Carol and Gregory are not exactly enemies they just have avoided each other for the past four years because of their mother’s matchmaking. Having never actually been thrown together where they could develop a relationship they are quite overcome with liking each other when they do get to know each other. But, of course,  there is a serious problem that arises.

Deet’s Rating: 5-stars    Christmasy Feeling: 5-stars

“A Kiss From a Rogue” by Eva Devon Bah and a hum bug: Sebatian Rutherford, the new Earl of Gray, has no desire to settle down. Ever. The only thing he dislikes more than the idea of taking over his recently inherited earldom, and all it’s responsibilities, is Christmas. So, when he agrees to an arranged marriage to the former earl’s daughter, he plans on a quick wedding and a quicker return to his adventures abroad. Surely, even a hint of Christmas cheer won’t need to be shared? But when his clever new wife, Lady Marabelle begins to thaw his heart, he finds that not only is family a joy, but Christmas may be the best season to lose one’s heart. Deck the Halls: Lady Marabelle loves Christmas. She loves everything about it. So, when she faces her first Christmas since the death of her beloved father, married to a man she’s never met, she decides to make sure that the Christmas hating new Earl must be taught the spirit of the season. But with each day toward Christmas that comes her way, she begins to find that perhaps a marriage of convenience can be a marriage of the heart and a veritable Christmas miracle.

**

Oh this is truly a yummy romance.  A handsome, adventurous, troubled man is about to marry a very astute, lovely woman whom he has never met.  They speak only a few words before they become man and wife.  Through the magic of her sweet personality she transforms this “Grinch” into a most enjoyable, loving person. All it takes is love.

Review- The Headmaster (Shivers) by Tiffany Reisz

Title: The Headmaster (Shivers)

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Author: Tiffany Reisz

Publisher: Harlequin Digital, April 2015

Source: Purchase

Pages: 135

Rating: 5

Sexy Rating: 5

Violence Rating: 2

Description from Amazon.com:

A fever dream of desires fulfilled.

Nestled in the shadow of the Appalachians is where Gwen Ashby stumbles upon the William Marshall Academy, and she’s given a trial position as a literature teacher. The gothic boarding school seems trapped in time yet it feels like home the moment Gwen arrives.

She’s charmed by the lovely buildings, bewitched by the eager students…and utterly seduced by the headmaster. Edwin Yorke is noble, handsome and infuriatingly proper. But his tweedy exterior and courtly manners conceal a raw sensual power that Gwen longs to unleash.

It’s strangely thrilling to be the only woman on campus—save one other. An eerie white-clad figure roams the grounds by night. She never speaks. She leaves no trace. But this ghostly blight on Gwen’s new dream life is the key to the Marshall Academy’s mysterious allure.

RITA® Award nominated title from International Bestselling Author Tiffany Reisz.

**

It’s that time of year when there is bubble, bubble toil and trouble.  But it isn’t easy to come across a romance that can give you a few shivers without also being a bit terrifying.  This one is shivers not terrors. I have wanted to read this author and since Harlequin is now having a big $1.99 sale this seemed the perfect time to pick up one of Ms. Reisz’ books.  This is a novella so it is a quick read but I started it late in the evening and was up until the wee hours because I had to finish it.  There are ghosts and mystery and twists and surprises along the way. Truly a delightful read.  The romance is sizzling. Gwen is intelligent and beautiful.  Edwin is a hot and hunky headmaster. The side characters are a delight. I highly recommend this book to all romance lovers and especially to paranormal fans.

Recent Release Review- The Cyn & Raphael Novellas by D. B. Reynolds

Title: The Cyn & Raphael Novellas: Betrayed, Hunted, Unforgiven and Compelled

Vampires In America Series

the-cyn-raphael-novellas

Genre: Paranormal Romance/Erotic/Urban Fantasy

Author: D.B. Reynolds

Publisher: ImaJinn, August 2016

Source: Free for review from the publisher

Pages: 270

Rating: 5

Sexy Rating: 5+

Violence Rating: 5

Descriptions from Amazon.com:

Betrayed: Vampires in America 5.5

War has come to the North American vampires, and Vampire Lords are reaching across territorial lines to strengthen allies and weaken enemies. The most powerful Lord of them all, Raphael, could change the course of the war and determine who raises the final banner of victory. But at what price? And will his mate, Cyn, be the one to pay it?

**Deet’s Thoughts:

In BETRAYED The evolution of the impending vampire war is introduced. Cyn and Raphael have a few moments of mistrust and several very, very hot sex scenes that last longer than a few moments. No one writes hot and steamy better than D.B. Reynolds. No. One!

This is a genre bending series. Often billed as Paranormal Romance it is in my opinion more Urban Fantasy Romance and in more recent books in the series Erotic Romance. The vampires are scary and not sparkly, the women they fall in love with are strong and confident. The setting is contemporary and the vampires are known to humans.

 Hunted: Vampires in America 6.5

The Lord of the Midwest is dead, and the powerful vampires of North America are gathering to choose his successor. The Vampire Council will be there to oversee the competition-each of them focused on keeping the violence to a bloody minimum, including Raphael, who will do whatever it takes to ensure the victor is a vampire he can trust. But someone is hunting, determined to stop Raphael and his mate, Cyn, from ever reaching Chicago. Soon, the hunter may become…the hunted.

**Deet’sThoughts:

As I’ve come to expect from this terrific author, the sex is positively sizzling, the storytelling is so accomplished that I could actually visualize the action scenes and feel the adrenaline rush. At this point my impression of Aden (A soon to be Vampire lord) is not a positive one. Perhaps we are not supposed to like him. This makes me doubly excited to read his story. It is always a delight to have Raphael and Cyn in a book (originally introduced in the book RAPHAEL), these two are so much in love and they can’t keep their hands off of each other. “I love you, my Cyn” he whispered against her lips, “Remember that.” “I don’t have to remember,” she said fervently. “You’ll always be here to tell me.” We also get a look at the relationship of Lucas and Katherine and the budding friendship of Katherine and Cyn. Can this novella be read as a stand-alone book? Yes, it is a story unto itself and I believe there is enough background to fill in any needed history. That said, you would be advised to read the series since it will give you a stronger feel for the characters.

 Unforgiven: Vampires in America 7.5

War is imminent, and a spy has infiltrated Raphael’s estate. But his target is not Raphael; it’s his sister, Alexandra, whose earlier duplicity nearly cost Cyn her life. Raphael and Cyn are determined to play the spy’s game, traveling to Mexico to discover who their enemy is and just how far he’ll go to win. But once Raphael finds his sister, can he take the chance that she won’t betray him again?

**Deet’s Thoughts:

War is coming to the North American vampires. European Vampires are being crowded out of their territories and need to expand. Raphael is the vampire lord trying to keep the enemy at bay. At the same time there are those who would undermine him. Yes, there are allusions to previous incidents in earlier books but this is still a standalone book. 86 pages of hot vampire action, smoldering tension, and sizzling sex. The relationship of human Cyn and vampire Raphael is always super sensuous and loving and this novella once again shows their union to be one of trust and respect. Security chief, Juro, is becoming more of a presence in the series. (I’m hoping he gets his own territory.) Second in command, Jared, remains an enigma to me and apparently Cyn has reservations about him, too.

From the beginning of this series the author has kept true to the world she has built around these vampires. Also from the first book, where Raphael and Cyn are introduced, we have watched their relationship grow stronger.

 Compelled: Vampires in America 10.5

It was only a few months ago that Raphael lay helpless and dying, taken by treachery, while Cyn fought to save him. Unexpectedly, it was Nick who provided the key to his freedom. In exchange, he secured a promise that they would help him find and recover the same magical artifact that had been used to imprison Raphael. But when he calls on them to keep that promise, it will be Cyn who pays the price.

Torn between the two powerful men, struggling to keep them from killing each other, she undertakes a desperate search that will find her fighting for her life against a madman who wants her for himself.

**Deet’s Thoughts:

Once again, in the fabulous Vampires In America series, we are treated to our favorite lovers, human Cyn and vampire Raphael. This time they have sorcerer Nick Katsaros calling in a promise to help him find the magical Amber Manacles. Can Cyn keep Raphael and Nick from causing each other bodily harm? The power of Raphael bounces off the page. The mysterious Nick is more subtle and his power seems more controlled than Raphael. But then Raphael is jealous of Cyn’s past with Nick. I personally can’t get enough of Cyn and her vampire but this deeper introduction to Nick is putting him on my book boyfriend radar. Who wouldn’t want an ancient, all powerful, handsome as sin sorcerer? Well, hells bells, this guy is certainly no Dumbldore. And since Cyn is already totally occupied by Raphael that leaves Nick up for grabs and I call dibs.

I HIGHLY recommend this book of terrific novellas and the entire Vampires In America series for all Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy and Thriller readers. Start at the beginning. You won’t want to miss anything, and RAPHAEL (Book #1 in the Vampires In America Series) is currently only $2.51 on Amazon.
