Stepping into seventeenth-century England, Julia becomes Mariana, a beautiful young woman struggling against danger and treachery, and battling a forbidden love for Richard de Mornay, handsome forebear of the present squire of Crofton Hall. Each time Julia travels back, she becomes more enthralled with the past, falling ever deeper in love with Richard…until one day she realizes Mariana’s life threatens to eclipse her own–and that she must find a way to lay the past to rest, or risk losing a chance for love in her own time.

Deet’s Review previously posted on this blog:

Rating: 5 glorious stars

sexy rating: 3

Here we have a ghost, reincarnation, time travel a heartrending love story of soulmates all wrapped up in exquisite prose. I could not put this book down, I had to read until the last page no matter the late hour. There is an element of subtle danger that culminates in heart pounding action and suspense. The ending is satisfying and romantic.

Romantic quote: “Ordinarily,” he went on, evenly, “I’m a patient man. But I think I’ve waited long enough.”……”Time we both stopped waiting, and began to live.”…. “These are your beautiful days, Julia Beckett.” He promised me softly.

I recommend this book to all romantics who like their stories well written and totally engrossing.

I thought her book THE ROSE GARDEN was my favorite until I read this one although I have loved each of her novels.

Sexy Rating: 5

Description from Amazon.com:

She needs a man-but only for a night What do you get when you imbibe centuries-old whiskey-besides a hangover the size of the Highlands? If you’re twenty-first century ad exec Gerard Innes, you get swept back to 18th-century Edinburgh and into the bed of a gorgeous, fiery redhead. Gerard has only a foggy idea what he and the lady have been up to…but what he does remember draws him into the most dangerous and exhilarating campaign of his life.

Be careful what you wish for… Serafina Seonag Fallon’s scoundrel of a fiancé has left her with nothing, and she’s determined to turn the tables. If she can come up with a ringer, she can claim the cargo he stole from her. But the dashing man she summons from the future demands more than a night, and Serafina finds it easier to command the seas under her feet than the crashing waves he unleashes in her heart.

**

Gwyn Cready’s Time Travel romances are full of action, adventure, sex and laugh out loud moments and this one does not disappoint.  Serafina asks her fortune teller friend Undine for help in claiming her stolen fortune.  The help she gets is Gerard Innes from NYC in the twenty-first century. Gerard wakes up in Scotland in the 18th century and is hard pressed to figure out what is going on.  Serafina whisks him away from danger almost immediately and the chase is on.  It is she and Gerard running from the bad guys and then she and Gerard running to claim her fortune.  The question seems to be if they will be successful before Gerard is taken back to his own time or even if they will survive in Serafina’s time. Peppered throughout the adventure is Gerard being the typical advertising executive even helping the tavern owner to increase his business.  As Serafina and Gerard rely on each other their romance flourishes.  Will Gerard choose to stay in Scotland with Serafina? Will it be possible? Will Serafina want to go with Gerard to The 21st century?

This is a light, fun time travel romance.  It is very sexy and very funny.  The side characters were introduced in Cready’s first book in this series, Just In Time For a Highlander. They are integral to this story but this is a standalone novel.

Kindle Daily Deal- The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley $1.99 (Today only)

The Winter Sea

This is practically a classic in my opinion.  A wonderful story steeped in history and so very entertaining.  Grab it at this price.

Here is the synopsis from Amazon:

Fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series will devour this hauntingly beautiful tale of love and time travel by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Susanna Kearsley.

History has all but forgotten…

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.

Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.

But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

Deet’s Review from August 29, 2012:

“Whatever time we have,” he said, “it will be time enough.” (This line is to die for.  How utterly romantic.)

The romance here is slow to develop and there is a question of will she or won’t she.  The fact that Eva had no control over her time travel until late in the book added to the excitement.  There are surprises that are hinted at and unfold to satisfy our guesses.  There is action, pathos, friendship and love.  This is the kind of book that doesn’t leave you when the last page is read.  It raises the “what if” questions and we really want to know what happens next and does it happen to anyone else. Absolutely delightful and this will go on my this year’s “top reads” list.

Description from Amazon.com:

A HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN

Recently freed from captivity in London Tower, Rae Mackinnon returns to the turbulent Highlands and claims his place as laird of Dunraven Castle. As he grapples with clan rivalries and divisiveness within his own family, he is confronted with a startling discovery — a beautiful woman from a distant future, delivered through the portals of Time and into his bed . . .

A VICTORIAN LADY

Swept up in the summer social rounds, Julia Hargrove accompanies her aunt and cousins on an excursion to Scotland, to an ancient castle which has hosted no visitors for two decades — until now. Rumors abound of unusual occurrences at Dunraven Castle — occurrences that are centered in the bedchamber Julia now occupies, where a rugged Highland warrior materializes from the past . . .

DRAWN IRRESISTIBLY THROUGH THE PORTALS OF TIME

What mysteries does Dunraven hold? What secret opens the temporal door, allowing Julia and Rae to reach across the centuries to claim a few stolen moments and nurture a blossoming love? But how long can the rules of Time be broken before the door shuts forevermore?

**

I love time-travel romances. At least I love the idea of them. So often I’ve been disappointed but every now and then I come across a hidden gem and this is one of those. This story is superbly plotted and so rich with time-slip explanations that the reader starts to think it could actually happen. Our Fifteenth century Highland Laird is, of course, the epitome of virile masculinity and handsome. Our Victorian miss is sweet, tender and much put-upon by her female relatives. There is a villain that we hope gets his comeuppance and a group of kindly old scientists who aid in the understanding of time-slips. This has been just a delightful book by a very accomplished author.

(I’m sorry! This book is no longer free on Amazon.  The price is back to around $3, still a good buy.)

Description from Amazon.com:

When Ella Briley asked her lucky-in-love friends to set her up for an office party, she was expecting a blind date. Instead, she’s pulled through a magic mirror and into the past…straight into the arms of her very own Mr. Darcy.

Patrick Meadowfair, earl of Fairhaven, is too noble for his own good. To save a female friend from what is sure to be a loveless marriage, he’s agreed to whisk her off to wed the man she truly wants. But all goes awry when Patrick mistakes Ella for the would-be bride and kidnaps her instead.

Centuries away from everything she knows, Ella’s finally found a man who heats her blood and leaves her breathless. Too bad he’s such a perfect gentleman. Yet the reluctant rake may just find this modern girl far too tempting for even the noblest of men to resist…

**

This author has no problem telling a story. We are treated to lots of action. She also has no problem with characterization, all are well developed.

But this reader had a problem with the lack of common sense that the heroine exhibits. She knows she must walk two miles to shelter on an unpaved roadway. She breaks one of her stiletto heels and instead of breaking off the other heel and struggling along the best she can she throws away her shoes and goes ahead in her tights/pantyhose. Well naturally two miles later she has cuts on her feet and then she gets an infection that nearly kills her. But she laments that everything “happens” to her as if her own stupidity is not to blame.

Patrick is not much smarter since he could have solved most of his problems early on by telling the truth to the Baron.

This Time Travel novel struck me as Regency chick-Lit. Obviously not my favorite genre. However if that is what you like then this book does offer a rousing good adventure. this is a standalone novel with some reference to the first two books.

P.S.- If that guy on the cover is our hero, then the book is worth the read just to fuel the imagination.

Geek Girls series:

The Geek Girl and the Scandalous Earl (Book 1)

Geek Girls Don’t Date Dukes (Book 2)

Kiss the Earl (Book 3)

How to tell if you are in a Regency Novel

Regency Edmund_Blair_Leighton_-_On_the_Threshold

1. You are either a virgin or a sad and lovely widow whose husband was lost at sea. You are spirited, but still passing ladylike.

2. Your father is away in the colonies protecting his tobacco interests, or a bumbling idiot, or a gambler. His character flaws lead to you becoming betrothed to a man you’ve never met.

3. Your dance card is filled up with the names of eligible gentlemen who are excessively unattractive.

4. You have a maiden aunt who despairs of you. You have a gaggle of sisters of marriageable age and they are all silly.

5. You are an incorrigible womanizer and you have lived in France. You are squandering your sizeable inheritance on loose women and card tables. You may very well be a pirate.
