Description from Amazon:

Two morally compromised souls wage a battle of wits—and seduction—against the backdrop of the French Revolution in this thrilling romance from bestselling author Shana Galen.

After her late husband leaves her in debt to some dangerous people, Lady Gabrielle McCullough is forced to become a thief. In the intervening years, her skills have not gone unnoticed. After being recruited by the Scarlet Pimpernel, the mysterious do-gooder spiriting aristocrats out of revolutionary France, Gabrielle crosses the Channel for the most daring mission of her life. Accompanying her is the Earl of Sedgwick, a thief in his own right and an enticingly masculine presence. The man is not to be trusted—nor is Gabrielle’s body when he’s near.

Ramsey Barnes would not say he is an honorable man. His whole life has been based on a lie; why change now? Although it pains him to deceive the tantalizing Gabrielle, he’s working toward an altogether different objective: unmasking the Scarlet Pimpernel. If Ramsey fails, his blackmailer will ruin him. But when Ramsey’s confronted with the carnage of the Reign of Terror, he seeks refuge in Gabrielle’s heated embrace. Now he faces a terrible choice: betray the woman who’s stolen his heart—or risk losing everything.

**
Hang on for a wild ride. Set in the tumultuous Reign of Terror, Lady Gabrelle is pressed into service by the Scarlet Pimpernel to help save a titled woman and her child from the Guillotine. The Earl, Ramsey, needs to find out the identity of the Pimpernel to save himself from his nefarious blackmailer, and Lady G. seems like a good entry to the Pimpernel. But what starts out as two individuals working for themselves turns into romance.

I enjoyed this action packed adventure romance. There are sexy times and very violent times. I admit to being a bit squeamish about all the “heads rolling”. Shana Galen can put us in the middle of the action and give us heart pounding scenes that keep the pages turning.

Description from Amazon.com:

When shy and secluded author Sara Fielding ventures from her country cottage to research a novel, she inadvertently witnesses a crime in progress—and manages to save the life of the most dangerous man in London.

Derek Craven is a powerful and near-legendary gambling club owner who was born a bastard and raised in the streets. His reputation is unsavory, his scruples nonexistent. But Sara senses that beneath Derek’s cynical exterior, he is capable of a love more passionate than her deepest fantasies.

Aware that he is the last man that an innocent young woman should ever want, Derek is determined to protect Sara from himself, no matter what it takes. But in a world where secrets lurk behind every shadow, he is the only man who can keep her safe. And as Derek and Sara surrender to an attraction too powerful to deny, a peril surfaces from his dark past to threaten their happiness . . . and perhaps even their lives.

Together they will discover if love is enough to make dreams come true.

**

This book is classic Lisa Kleypas.  It is filled with emotion both of the horrific kind and the passionate type. We are treated to the quintessential bad boy in Derick Craven.  He is handsome, scarred, wealthy and both despised and lauded by the Ton.  He has led an immoral life of thievery, prostitution and murder.  Sara Fielding is a naïve young woman from the country who manages to innocently get herself in dire situations.  She is often lucky in her ability to escape but perhaps her luck will run out.

Of course there is the suspense of will these two opposites manage to evoke a happily ever after. There are outside forces keeping them apart as well as a crazed villain.

There is absolutely nothing like a Kleypas book to keep you turning pages all night long.  This is one of her best.  Although the second in the Gamblers duo, this is certainly a standalone novel. For a real treat read this one to see how she redeems an irredeemable man.

(Deet’s note: I read and reviewed this book once before and only gave it 4-stars.  I don’t know what I was thinking.  Or, perhaps I’ve learned in the intervening years to appreciate a good book. Any way here is a link to my first review if you are interested and it also has a cover of the actual book in my keeper library. https://ladeetdareads.wordpress.com/2013/04/03/review-dreaming-of-you-by-lisa-kleypas/
