Zelda is the silent partner in the clandestine organization known as The Associates. Liza is Zelda’s twin who got involved with a drug lord and was gambled away to another drug lord. Zelda agrees to take her twin’s place and is flown to the jungles of South America. Can she maintain her hidden identity long enough to get some information for her company’s current operation?

Hugo and Paolo appear to the locals as an American gentleman farmer and his son. But Hugo has a secret past and he is on a mission when he saves Zelda from some very bad guys and brings her to his home to be his cook and teacher for Paolo. Can he maintain his secrets as he becomes more enamored of his captive?

As with all the books in The Associates series we are thrust into the action with an adrenaline rush and it does not let go until hours after we close the last page. This is a dark and supremely satisfying book. There is violence and torture so be prepared but this will not deter the reader as the pages are flipped rapidly to find out what will happen next. There is little more satisfying then reading an author who knows how to write a story line and plot and keeps us on the edge of our seats throughout the book. Carolyn Crane is this kind of author. BEHIND THE MASK is this kind of book.

Yes, there is romance amid the mayhem. Zelda and Hugo do not want to fall in love but they are the yin and yang to each other and it is inevitable. Zelda fills the empty place in Hugo’s heart and Zelda has been falling in love with this killer since she first saw his blurry photo years ago while trying to capture him and failing. But we readers can’t help but think their love is doomed from the start.

I highly recommend this thriller to all romance fans who like their novels dark, rough and gritty. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Description from author’s website ( http://authorcarolyncrane.com ):

Thorne McKelvey knows exactly how Nadia sees him—as a brute and a killer just kinky enough to play her sexy games. And that’s how it has to stay. Leaving her was the hardest thing he ever did, but his undercover mission could blow up at any second. No way will he drag Nadia down with him.

Maybe it was foolish to fall in love with her late father’s deadliest henchman, but Nadia Volkov’s not sorry; without Thorne she wouldn’t have their beautiful little boy. There’s nothing she won’t do to protect Benny, which means she must hide his identity—especially from his father.

Now Thorne has burst back into her home, searching for clues to a gangland mystery…and stirring a hunger Nadia hasn’t felt in two years. But Benny’s identity isn’t the only secret she’s keeping, and things are turning deadly. Can Thorne and Nadia trust each other long enough to stay alive and have a chance at happiness?

If you want to know how just reading a book can give you an adrenalin rush then this is the book that will do it.  Carolyn Crane starts this book off with an action scene and she doesn’t let you off the hook for the entire book.  This is a story of gangsters, gangs and a family.  It deals with the underbelly of society and shocks us with sweatshop slave rings, drug dealing and money laundering by the lowlifes that populate that society.  The romance is surrounded by lies by both the hero and heroine but they have an undeniable attraction to each other that sizzles and ignites the page in flames. The alpha hero is damaged physically and emotionally and the heroine has overcome a party-girl lifestyle to take up a mission that redeems her image. Both are no-holds-barred tough, and calculating.  It is so satisfying when their individual missions become entwined and they can team together.

This is the third book in Ms. Crane’s Undercover Associates series and is a welcome addition. Each book is a standalone novel.  I highly recommend this series and especially this book to those who like a non-stop, page turning experience. You’re gonna love this one!

Description from Amazon.com:

For deadly secret agent Peter Macmillan, language is a weapon—one he uses to hunt criminals, destroy plots, and charm enemies. Seducing information out of a beautiful singer in a Bangkok hotel should be easy…except this particular singer has the power to destroy his cool façade, and with it, his last defense against a dark past.

He tricked her. He helped himself to her body and her secrets. He has enemies everywhere. Laney Lancaster should hate Peter, but when she discovers him shirtless, sweaty, and chained up in the hotel’s dungeon, all she can think about is freeing him. Because she knows what it’s like to be trapped and alone. And she could use a dangerous friend.

They might be wrong for each other, but the instant they join forces, Laney and Peter are plunged into an odyssey of hot sex and dark danger. To survive, they must trust each other with their lives—and their hearts.

Woo-Hee! Hang on to something solid cause this novel is a thriller and it leaves you breathless in it’s wake.

Laney is naïve and beautiful.  Peter is hunky and oh so dangerous.  Because she is naïve, she continues to try and help Peter when his purpose is to keep her clear of his job as a linguistic, hot, dangerous, warrior spy.  Peter might have been able to get his job done quicker and with less personal injury if Laney had just left him alone but then the reader would have been robbed of all those great moments when she refused to leave him be.

The book starts off with a bang when we feel the terror that Laney experiences when she feels her hiding as been compromised.  She feels something is about to come crashing down but those around her are continually reassuring her that all is well.  All except Peter who is the one who tells her to follow her gut instinct.  The pace picks up even more until we are turning pages faster and faster.  The tension builds and the action is nonstop.  The chemistry between Laney and Peter is smokin’ and they do take time out to explore that, but then it is flat out full steam ahead with more action, violence and blood.

This is a standalone novel in Crane’s Associates Series.

Deet’s Caveat: This novel contains strong violence and torture scenes as well as explicit sex.

Description from amazon.com: Justine Jones faces her ultimate enemy: herself.

The Disillusionists Trilogy, Book 3

In an attempt to put her unhappy past behind her, Justine Jones throws herself into nursing school and planning her wedding to Otto Sanchez, the man of her dreams. But something is off. Random details aren’t adding up…and is it her imagination, or are her friends and fiancé keeping secrets from her? And what’s with the strange sense of unease, and her odd new headaches?

Justine tries to stay upbeat as Midcity cowers under martial law, sleepwalking cannibals, and a mysterious rash of paranormal copycat violence, but her search for answers leads her into the most dangerous mind game yet.

With the help of unlikely allies, including her paranoid dad and best frenemy Simon, Justine fights her ultimate foe…and unravels the most startling mystery of all.

Warning: This book contains high-speed rollerblade chases, a mysterious green dashboard ornament, a father of the bride in full hazmat gear and a delicious kebab.

Do not read this book if you have not read the first two books in the series, MIND GAMES (BOOK 1), DOUBLE CROSS (BOOK 2).  If you have read the first two then I don’t know how you can possibly pass this one up.  Carolyn Crane has written herself a fabulous meal ticket in this trilogy.

I had, in the past, read some Urban Fantasy novels that left me scratching my head and thinking the genre was just not my cuppa tea.  Then I actually read a book that changed my opinion and I realized I had just had unfortunate encounters with previous UF’s.  That mind changing book was Carolyn Crane’s first offering in this trilogy, MIND GAMES.  As I finish up the trilogy with this offering, Head Rush, I’m looking forward to more from Ms Crane in 2012.

Carolyn Crane has a brilliant imagination.  She develops and portrays a world so like our own gone completely wrong.  She peoples this world with the outlandish and outcasts.  There are fantastical powers that some wield and there are those who are near paralyzed with mind tormenting fears.  All of this over-the-top becomes perfectly normal and understandable in her capable hands.

This final book in the trilogy offers plenty of, romance, action and adventure, and a satisfying ending. It had me in tears and cheers.

(You can find a review of book 2 of this trilogy, DOUBLE CROSS, on this blog on Dec. 14, 2011;  easily found by clicking on the December archives in the upper left.)

Justine Jones lived her life as a fearful hypochondriac until she was lured into the web of a mysterious mastermind named Packard, who gifts her with extraordinary mental powers—dooming her to fight Midcity’s shadowy war on paranormal crime in order to find the peace she so desperately craves.

But now serial killers with unheard-of skills are terrorizing the most powerful beings in Midcity, including mastermind Packard and his oldest friend and worst enemy, Midcity’s new mayor, who has the ability to bend matter itself to his will.

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men—one on a journey of redemption, the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

I read the first book in this series, MIND GAMES, this is what I had to say about it:

“Carolyn Crane has taken people who should be on the psych ward and turned them into covert operatives to evoke laughs, suspense, sexy romance and drama. This is the most original story I have read in recent years. The plotting is well done and the prose way above the norm for Urban Fantasy. Cudos to Ms. Crane.” (My Amazon Review June 2010)

I could repeat the same for this installment in the trilogy except that she has made the love  triangle even more of an important issue.  I found myself rooting for both brilliant heroes at different times throughout the novel.  Ms. Crane has developed these characters so well that we are continually surprised when they surprise us.  In this fantasy world there are those who have special powers, “High Caps”, who try to manipulate humans to do their bidding.  There are humans who have flawed psyches, who deal with terrors of the mind and are manipulated into doing the bidding of the high capacity ones just to experience some relief from their mind-terrors.  There is a wonderful creative imagination behind this trilogy.  I didn’t find DOUBLE CROSS, as humorous as the first book but there is more romance in this one.  I will definitely read the third and last installment, HEAD RUSH which just became published on Dec. 6, 2011.

I do suggest you start with Book 1, MIND GAMES.  Since all three are now published you won’t have to wait to read each one.
