You all know I cook, maybe not very well but often.  When I had the chance to review this cookbook I thought “Why not, I like the ATK’s TV show and I’ve enjoyed their Cook’s Illustrated Magazine”.  I really thought I would get a useful book for reading but probably I wouldn’t make many recipes. I have never been more wrong.  The recipes can be made in under 45 minutes and some in under 25 minutes.  They use easily found supermarket ingredients, even in the Asian and Indian recipes.  The appendix contains recommendations for the best brands to buy in every category from canned goods to meats to dairy products.  There are how-to’s on Veggie prepping, knife holding and recommended kitchen equipment to purchase. There are tips with each recipe. I have made several recipes and they have all been delicious and quick just as promised. AND it is in a lay-flat 5 ring binderwith 442 pages.  This is my new go-to cookbook.  This cookbook would be an ideal bridal shower gift or bachelor/bachelorette first apartment gift. It is also ideal for the harried modern family who needs a meal on the table pronto.

Deet’s Life- FOOD-Deet’s Eats

I have compiled a cookbook.  Most of the recipes are from family and friends and a few I have devised all by myself.  I like to cook.  Not so much these days but I will cook anything if it means I don’t have to go out and eat the awful things they are serving in my local restaurants at ungodly high prices.  If those of you have fabulous eating joints, then consider yourselves very lucky.

My cookbook is titled; DEET’S EATS: a compendium of stolen recipes, I wrote it about 10 years ago and I have updated it with new recipes often.  The major and only requirement, of the book, was that the recipes be delicious.  I don’t worry about fat grams or calories per se, but some of my recipes are very diet friendly….some… not at all.  They are not stolen, “borrowed” is more like it.

This is what I’m making for dinner tonight.  I like this recipe because it can be put together early, left in the fridge, and then popped in the oven to cook for two hours while I devour another novel.  And it is yummy. Tonight I’m serving it with mashed potatoes, Broccoli/Cauliflower/carrot mix, green salad and a glass or two of red wine.

Deet’s Swiss Bliss (seves 4-6)

2 pounds boneless beef chuck steak (or top round steak)

1 envelope onion soup mix( use Lipton or Mrs. Grass)

4 oz can sliced mushrooms, drained

½ green pepper sliced

15 oz can whole or diced tomatoes, drained reserving ½ cup liquid

1 T Worcestershire sauce

2 T cornstarch

Pepper to taste( no salt is needed there is plenty in the soup mix)

Cut steak into serving size pieces and arrange slightly overlapping in the center of a LONG piece of aluminum foil, sprayed with PAM, on a cookie sheet.(or a 9×12” pan) (don’t forget to turn up edges slightly to contain the liquid while you are putting this together)

Sprinkle over the meat: onion soup mix, then mushrooms, green peppers, drained tomatoes, pepper.

Mix ½ cup liquid from tomatoes with the Worcestershire and the cornstarch until smooth.  Pour over the veggies.

Seal the foil into a packet on top and sides.  Bake for 2 hours at 350 degrees.

Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.  The gravy is delicious.
