Description from Amazon.com:

Third in the saucy, vibrant Rakes & Rogues Regency romance series from USA Today bestselling author Jade Lee

A most unusual wager

Mari Powel’s fiery Welsh temper is up. Peter Norwood, Lord Whitly, is back in town after six years romping around India making his fortune. Mari blames him for her social downfall and has spent all this time clawing her way back into the ton’s good graces. How dare he show up on his first day back and publicly embroil her in a bet involving long-awaited apologies, illicit kisses, and Lady Illston’s unruly parakeet? Mari is outraged, and is going to show him-and everyone else-what she’s made of. Little does she know, the unrepentant Lord Whitly has been dreaming of her all this time. Now he’ll do anything to win the wager-along with Mari’s heart.

**

This starts off seeming a pretty straight forward enemies to lovers story and yes it starts that way, but along the way we have some surprises and upsets that seem to be unresolvable.  However in the hands of one of the masters of the romance genre, Ms. Jade Lee, all is worked out and accomplished with apparent ease. I can’t recall how many of Ms Lee’s novels I have read but they are many and every single time I am enthralled with the story and this book is no different.

We see Mari’s development from a wound-tight perfectionista to a woman that loosens her stays and states her mind.  Peter also makes some heartbreaking decisions because it is the right thing to do. Together they discover how they complement, need each other and fall in love. There are moments of danger and some villains. There are fun moments while they each try to teach the parakeet “Greenie” a new phrase to win a bet.  We know Mari’s phrase but we must wait to hear Peter’s phrase.  Can you guess? I didn’t.

This is a well written page turner. Highly recommended.

Description from Amazon.com:

A brown-eyed bastard with nothing to lose

As the illegitimate son of a duke, Bramwell Wesley Hallowsby grew up tough, on the fringes of society, learning to hide his hurt and cynicism with charm and Town polish. He’s carved out a place for himself as a mercenary, serving as bodyguard and general strong arm for the peerage. Bram has nothing to lose… and he’s exactly what Maybelle “Bluebell” Ballenger needs.

Meets his match in a blue-eyed beauty with everything to hide

Maybelle needs a mentor to teach her to speak and act like a lady, so she can claim the place in society she was denied. As they team up to take on the ton, Bram knows she’s hiding something even from him. Despite the deception he sees behind those sparkling blue eyes, Bram wants to believe that Maybelle’s love is no lie. But it seems fate has served him up his just desserts in the likes of this determined damsel.

**

Laugh out loud funny! This delight is filled with a hero who is a mighty legend in the minds of the ton but who is just really rather ordinary, an ordinary country girl heroine who is really rather extraordinary, a hilarious ton couple, Dicky and Clarissa, who are swindlers on the run hiring our hero, Bram, for protection and a rather corpulent pig that needs rescuing.  All this fun is tied up with a slow building romance.

Jade Lee is masterful at plotting and characterization.  She shines in this, the first of hers that I’ve read, that brings such accomplished comedy. This romance is perfect for this time of the year when we want to feel the warmth of the season and read a heartwarming, lusty, perfect story. I guarantee you will like this one.

Description from amazon.com:

The London rookeries are slums, rife with criminals, and shunned by the upper crust.
But someone there intends to murder one of England’s greatest leaders, and Marcus Kane, Lord Chadwick, will follow every clue, even into the bowels of London’s underground. But he can’t find his way alone.

A partner is required.
Fantine (Fanny) Delarive is perfect. She knows the slums better any, has survived its labyrinth alone for years, and knows every criminal lurking in every dark corner.
Then, the investigation detours the pair into the bright ballrooms of the ton.
And Fantine fits in here, too.  Which changes everything.

Lord Chadwick knows a woman of Fantine’s ilk is entirely unsuitable for him. But she’s infinitely more exciting than any well-born lady he’s ever met.
Now much more than an acquaintance with the independent, self-reliant Fantine is required… and it must end with nothing less than marriage.

**

I seem to be on a kick where I’m reading books about the seamier side of Regency England.  Elizabeth Hoyt’s Maiden Lane series is like that and now I’ve discovered Jade Lee’s  Regency Rags to Riches Series.

In this, the first book of the Regency Rags to Riches Series, we are treated to the fantastic Fanny who has grown up in the London slums where she has learned how to survive by her wits and ability to be an actress and disguise herself as a boy.  She is also a spy and works for the crown at the behest of a Lord of the Realm.  She is so fiercely independent that we wonder if she and Lord Chadwick, a fellow spy, can ever find romantic happiness across the social and economic divide.

Jade Lee has created two characters that are personality personified.  They are so deliciously developed we can feel that each of them is an actual person not merely born of the imagination of a superb writer.  Of course, a future Earl is not likely to fall in love and marry a slum girl back in Regency times but we can certainly love the idea that it might have happened.

The sexual tension is sizzling along with the satisfying conclusion.  There is enough action in this book to thrill the adventure loving reader and even some delightful laugh out loud moments that although a mite bit farfetched are none the less delightful and welcome.

Description from Amazon.com:

Mellie Smithson has a plan… Mellie Smithson is trapped in the country with no suitors and no prospects on the horizon except, perhaps, the exasperating-although admittedly handsome-guest of her father. Unwilling to settle, Mellie will do anything to escape to London…

Trevor Anaedsley has a problem… Trevor Anaedsley’s grandfather has cut off his funds until he gets engaged. Beset by creditors, Trevor escapes to the country-ostensibly to visit his old tutor Mr. Smithson-where he meets Smithson’s lovely daughter Mellie. The obvious solution is suddenly before him-but will this fake engagement go as Trevor and Mellie plan? Or will they find that even the best laid plans often go awry?

**

Can a bluestocking miss and a down on his luck aristocrat find happiness through manipulation, wild schemes and plans that back fire? Mellie has no shortage of interested suitors but she quickly discovers she has heart palpitations for only one. Trevor finds he can’t stand to see Mellie with any man but himself, could this mean something?

The side characters were well realized. Ronnie, Mellie’s stalker of a cousin was the buffoon. The Duke and Duchess, Radley and Wendy, were back from Lee’s previous novel WHAT THE GROOM WANTS. Eleanor, Radley’s cousin, deserves her own book and Carl Rausch, Who was tempting Mellie away from Trevor was sufficiently smarmy.

Jade Lee gives us her trademark superb writing with a humorous twist in this her latest romance. We know when we pick up one of her books that there will be excellent drama, sublime sensual scenes, characters that jump off the page and spot on plotting and pacing. She does not disappoint in this offering. The surprise was in the humor that runs through the entire story. She writes sexual tension and sex scenes that scorch the pages.

You really can’t go wrong with this fun, satisfying read.

MEET JADE LEE:
Jade Lee, a USA Today bestseller, has two passions (well, except for her family, but that’s a given). She loves dreaming up stories and playing racquetball, not always in that order. When her pro-racquetball career ended with a pair of very bad knees, she turned her attention to writing. An author of more than 30 romance novels, she’s decided that life can be full of joy without ever getting up from her chair.

Description from Amazon.com:

An honest love…

Radley Lyncott has been in love with Wendy Drew as long as he can remember. When he went to sea, she was too young to court. Now that he’s returned to take up his Welsh title, he is appalled to find that debt has ruined the Drew family, and—even worse—Wendy is being courted by another man.

Or a dangerous attraction?

Family comes first for seamstress Wendy Drew, who is forced to settle her brother’s debt by working nights at a notorious gambling den. But her double-life hasn’t gone unnoticed—she has captivated none other than Demon Damon, a nefarious rake who understands Wendy’s darkest desires and is hell bent on luring her into his arms.

**

Jade Lee is one of those authors that catapults you into the story so that there is no sense of time passing as you turn pages to find out what will happen next.  This divinely plotted book is full of mystery, suspense, sexy romance, Evil and evil deeds, twists and turns and a heroine that is feisty, smart and courageous. The hero is also courageous, strong and steadfast in his devotion. The villain is so wicked that shivers run down my spine whenever he makes an appearance

The romance is full of Love because the hero has loved the heroine forever.  The heroine doubts that they can make a go of it because she is a seamstress and he is a Duke. But he is not taking “no”for an answer.

Wendy turned away, but her lips curved into a smile. “I am not the wind, and you are not a ship.” (Radley) “And yet you lift my spirits and together we soar” She felt her skin flush with heat.  No one had ever spoken so prettily to her.

Jade Lee’s Bridal Favors Series has been absorbing, interesting and delightful.  This is a standalone book but it does reference characters that have had previous books in the series so I recommend that you read the entire series.  You won’t be sorry. Lee illustrates how romance books should be written, she is a master storyteller.

Description from amazon.com:

Grant Benton, Earl of Crowle finally has the funds he always pretended to have and what he wants now is a woman. That woman is Lady Irene Knopp, who spends her days helping debutantes plan their weddings. A recent widow, Irene longs for love again, but she’s afraid to risk her heart, especially to the notorious Grant Benton.

**

Jade Lee once again gives us a good story.  This is a follow-up to the novella WINNING THE BRIDE, published in July 2013. In “Winning” we met Will Benton who was a second son and steward of land that had once belonged to his family but now was in the hands of someone else.  Grant Benton, Will’s brother, had been accused of selling the family land and disappearing to avoid family pressure.  In this book we find out exactly what Grant has been doing for those years he disappeared.

Jade Lee offers us a look at what a lack of communication can do to a family and how that same family can be reunited and healed.  She does this through the story of Grant and Irene a match that seemed predestined from their first meeting.  But Irene is an independent woman who loves her job as a fabric buyer for her friend Helaine who runs “A Lady’s Favor” dress shop (Helaine’s Story is in series book #2, WEDDED IN SCANDAL).  She will not give up her job to marry a Peer of the Realm. Grant also has issues with the fact that he is an Earl and he worked in a trade for five years.

Lee immerses us in the Regency period, gives us a healthy dose of societal expectations and weaves a spell around her characters that draws us into the era.  She presents us with her characters frustrations and longings so that they can be felt viscerally by the reader.  She is so good at this that we even experience our own frustrations with Grant, we crave that he stop fixating on his work history, and with Irene, we want her to believe that she can have love and an independent job.  Yes, we want this but do the mores of the day prevent the characters from having what we want for them?

Truly this book offers insight into the early 1800’s and the society that it encompassed.  Lee gives us heart pounding action, breathtaking romance and sensuality, all while furthering the story of the women of A Lady’s Favor dress shop.  I do suggest that you start at the beginning of this series so you can understand all the relationships of the characters for full enjoyment.  However, this is a novel that can be read on its own.

Description :

Due to his aristocratic family’s downfall, William Benton serves as steward on the land his brother should have inherited. His one weakness is for the daughter of the new owner. Josephine Lawton is beautiful, charming, and enamored of titles and all things aristocratic. So when she becomes engaged to a man he knows to be a wastrel and a fool, Will puts all his passion into restoring his family’s honor and winning the woman he loves. It’s going to be a hot summer on the estate.

**

Ah, these “descriptions” don’t always tell it the way it is.  Josephine is not all that “enamoured of titles” she understands that her father is determined that she marry a titled lord.  The titled lord in question is not so much a wastrel and fool as an aristocrat in need of the land in Jo’s dowry.  But Will wants this land that has been in his family for years until his brother needed to sell it to Jo’s father.  Mr Lawton will not consider Will’s proposal to marry Jo because Will’s family is so scandalous.

Jade Lee can bring characters to life like no other.  Their personalities are evident in every line of dialog and in every scene throughout.  Ms Lee can also infuse a plot with so much emotion, action and angst that we cannot put down the book.  Did I mention her steamy love scenes are top notch?  There is intelligence that pours through the entire story and lets you know that this is something special.

I highly recommend this novella prequel to Jade Lee’s upcoming full length novel,  WHAT THE BRIDE WORE (release date, August 6, 2013),  featuring Will’s brother,  Grant , who sold the family estate.
