Description from Amazon.com:

They had a deal . . . From the moment she met the devil-may-care Duke of Margrave, Edie knew he could change her life. And when he agreed to her outrageous proposal of a marriage of convenience, she was transformed from ruined American heiress to English duchess. Five years later, she’s delighted with their arrangement, especially since her husband is living on another continent.

But deals are made to be broken . . . By marrying an heiress, Stuart was able to pay his family’s enormous debts, and Edie’s terms that he leave England forever seemed a small price to pay. But when a brush with death impels him home, he decides it’s time for a real marriage with his luscious American bride, and he proposes a bold new bargain: ten days to win her willing kiss. But is ten days enough to win her heart?

**

The description makes this book sound like a typical frothy historical romance but it really deals with the emotional issues of a rape victim in Victorian times.  Though it is a dark subject, the author brings hope and love to the heroine even though she resists it almost to the end of the book.  The hero is a man with enough sympathy for the heroine to help her overcome her traumatic past.  He is to be admired for his protectiveness of Edie.  Ms. Guhrke’s dialog is believable and her characterization is period accurate. I recommend this book to Historical Romance readers.

Advance Review- When The Marquess Met His Match by Laura Lee Guhrke

Description from amazon.com:

She’s the matchmaker . . .

Lady Belinda Featherstone’s job is to guide American heiresses to matrimony, and away from men like Nicholas, Marquess of Trubridge. But the charming, disreputable marquess needs a wealthy bride, and he hires Belinda to help him find one. Her task seems easy: find that scoundrel the sort of wife he so richly deserves. But Nicholas’s hot, searing kiss soon proves her task will be anything but easy.

He’s the perfect match . . .

Nicholas plans to wed a rich, pretty young darling to restore his fortune, and he’s happy to pay a marriage broker to help him. But one taste of Belinda’s lips and Nicholas’ sensible scheme to marry for money goes awry, and he yearns to show his beautiful matchmaker he’s the perfect match . . . for her.

**

Nicholas has had his income cut off by his controlling father.  That is why he is desperate to marry a wealthy woman.  He has an estate to maintain and peers of the realm are not supposed to actually work for a living.  He also has a dissolute past and Belinda wants nothing to do with him, but when he accidentally meets her sweet, young wealthy friend who seems to find him fascinating….well, she must strike a bargain with the marquess.  She will help him find a wife, if he stays away from her friend.

This is another delightful romance from accomplished author Ms. Guhrke.  She has created a very proper, conservative heroine who maintains that personality throughout the book even when she finally succumbs to temptation.   The marquess is everything we want in a romance book hero, he’s handsome, intelligent, confident,  strong, has a bad boy past but is willing to reform all for a woman he loves….sigh.

This is a slow building romance with a bad man throwing obstacles in the way of true love and a heroine trying her best not to give into her desires. Delightful.

This book publishes on October 29th but is available for pre-order.

Review- And Then He Kissed Her by Laura Lee Guhrke

Title: And Then He Kissed Her

Genre: Historical Victorian Romance

Author: Laura Lee Guhrke

Publisher: Avon, 2007

Source: Purchase, Kindle $.99

Rating: 4

Sexy Rating: 5

Description from amazon.com:

An expert in etiquette, Emma takes her pristine reputation most seriously.

But the devilish Lord Marlowe is determined to prove that some rules of proper behavior are made to be broken

**

Yes, this may be a bit predictable but the slow seduction of straitlaced Emma is rather fun.  At first they are indifferent to each other, then they are antagonistic and then in the throes of a torrid affair.  But can a woman who earns a living writing a newspaper column on her firm Victorian Etiquette beliefs really play this game?

Laura Lee Guhrke can lead us down a path where all things are possible.  She can write emotional scenes where Emma struggles with the choices she makes and scenes where our hero is sometimes clueless or self centered or so understanding that we become envious of Emma.

I recommend this book to HR fans.  This was my first book by this author; I will certainly read more from Laura Lee Guhrke.
