Description from Amazon.com:

Montreal, Quebec . . . A charming city on the St. Lawrence River, historic, sophisticated, but beneath it all lies an extensive underground where treacherous vampires are plotting to seize the country. Lucifer Scuderi is a vampire—handsome and charismatic, a powerful hunter of unusual skill—who arrives in Montreal to take on the most important hunt of his life. Someone has kidnapped the mate of Canada’s ruling vampire lord, and it’s up to Lucifer to find him before his death sets off a crisis that could engulf the entire continent. Eleanor Morel lost everything—including the love of her life—when she became a vampire. But now, twenty years later, she’s a trusted bodyguard to the Canadian lord, Sophia, and the only person Sophia can count on to lead the search for her endangered mate. But what Eleanor doesn’t know is that the special hunter she’ll be working with is none other than her long-lost love. And he’s demanding answers. Lucifer’s love for Eleanor burns as hot as his anger towards her for leaving him. But they’ll have to find a way to set history aside and work together if they’re going to unravel the twisted betrayal that threatens not only Sophia and her mate, but the whole continent. Because the European vampires are on the move. And if Canada falls, the rest of North America could follow . . .

**

I’m always wondering how to classify the genre of the Vampires In America Series.  Yes, it is Paranormal Romance but it is also Urban Fantasy, Romantic Suspense and Erotic Romance.  It is romance in that the focus is always on the romantic involvement of the main characters but the running side story is all about vampire politics which is often violent and conniving.  In this installment we are treated to the most romantic of all of Reynolds’ vampires.  Lucifer Scuderi loved Eleanor before she was made a vampire and lost her twenty years ago. Now he finds her again as his aide in recovering the kidnapped Colin and he has no intentions of losing her again. Eleanor is still besotted with Lucifer but thinks that their relationship is doomed because she thinks two vampires cannot find happiness together. Together they make a formidable team in the search for Colin.

This series is still going strong after eleven books which is to the credit of terrific writing and an author not afraid to change things up. Always, Ms. Reynolds’ heroines are feisty and quite able to take care of themselves in this violent world. Eleanor is a vampire to be reckoned with. Humans, those not a love interest of the protagonists, are relegated to bit-part players, usually as daytime trusted guards of the vampires. I would like to see humans playing a more pivotal role in the series. There is a lot of sex in this book. A lot! I personally would have liked less because the story did not need this amount to carry the plot or theme. I even found myself skipping some sex scenes, which is far beyond what I usually do, so I could get back to the meat of the story. The action scenes are truly well choreographed and leave us biting our nails to wait for the end of the confrontation.  The suspense is riveting.

This is a superb addition to a superb series.  Yes, this is a standalone book but you would do well to enjoy the entire series starting with book #1 RAPHAEL. You can type in my search box Vampires In America to find my reviews for all of the books in the series.

Description from Amazon.com:

A fever dream of desires fulfilled.

Nestled in the shadow of the Appalachians is where Gwen Ashby stumbles upon the William Marshall Academy, and she’s given a trial position as a literature teacher. The gothic boarding school seems trapped in time yet it feels like home the moment Gwen arrives.

She’s charmed by the lovely buildings, bewitched by the eager students…and utterly seduced by the headmaster. Edwin Yorke is noble, handsome and infuriatingly proper. But his tweedy exterior and courtly manners conceal a raw sensual power that Gwen longs to unleash.

It’s strangely thrilling to be the only woman on campus—save one other. An eerie white-clad figure roams the grounds by night. She never speaks. She leaves no trace. But this ghostly blight on Gwen’s new dream life is the key to the Marshall Academy’s mysterious allure.

RITA® Award nominated title from International Bestselling Author Tiffany Reisz.

It’s that time of year when there is bubble, bubble toil and trouble.  But it isn’t easy to come across a romance that can give you a few shivers without also being a bit terrifying.  This one is shivers not terrors. I have wanted to read this author and since Harlequin is now having a big $1.99 sale this seemed the perfect time to pick up one of Ms. Reisz’ books.  This is a novella so it is a quick read but I started it late in the evening and was up until the wee hours because I had to finish it.  There are ghosts and mystery and twists and surprises along the way. Truly a delightful read.  The romance is sizzling. Gwen is intelligent and beautiful.  Edwin is a hot and hunky headmaster. The side characters are a delight. I highly recommend this book to all romance lovers and especially to paranormal fans.

Recent Release Review- The Cyn & Raphael Novellas by D. B. Reynolds

Title: The Cyn & Raphael Novellas: Betrayed, Hunted, Unforgiven and Compelled

Vampires In America Series

the-cyn-raphael-novellas

Author: D.B. Reynolds

Pages: 270

Sexy Rating: 5+

Violence Rating: 5

Descriptions from Amazon.com:

Betrayed: Vampires in America 5.5

War has come to the North American vampires, and Vampire Lords are reaching across territorial lines to strengthen allies and weaken enemies. The most powerful Lord of them all, Raphael, could change the course of the war and determine who raises the final banner of victory. But at what price? And will his mate, Cyn, be the one to pay it?

**Deet’s Thoughts:

In BETRAYED The evolution of the impending vampire war is introduced. Cyn and Raphael have a few moments of mistrust and several very, very hot sex scenes that last longer than a few moments. No one writes hot and steamy better than D.B. Reynolds. No. One!

This is a genre bending series. Often billed as Paranormal Romance it is in my opinion more Urban Fantasy Romance and in more recent books in the series Erotic Romance. The vampires are scary and not sparkly, the women they fall in love with are strong and confident. The setting is contemporary and the vampires are known to humans.

 Hunted: Vampires in America 6.5

The Lord of the Midwest is dead, and the powerful vampires of North America are gathering to choose his successor. The Vampire Council will be there to oversee the competition-each of them focused on keeping the violence to a bloody minimum, including Raphael, who will do whatever it takes to ensure the victor is a vampire he can trust. But someone is hunting, determined to stop Raphael and his mate, Cyn, from ever reaching Chicago. Soon, the hunter may become…the hunted.

**Deet’sThoughts:

As I’ve come to expect from this terrific author, the sex is positively sizzling, the storytelling is so accomplished that I could actually visualize the action scenes and feel the adrenaline rush. At this point my impression of Aden (A soon to be Vampire lord) is not a positive one. Perhaps we are not supposed to like him. This makes me doubly excited to read his story. It is always a delight to have Raphael and Cyn in a book (originally introduced in the book RAPHAEL), these two are so much in love and they can’t keep their hands off of each other. “I love you, my Cyn” he whispered against her lips, “Remember that.” “I don’t have to remember,” she said fervently. “You’ll always be here to tell me.” We also get a look at the relationship of Lucas and Katherine and the budding friendship of Katherine and Cyn. Can this novella be read as a stand-alone book? Yes, it is a story unto itself and I believe there is enough background to fill in any needed history. That said, you would be advised to read the series since it will give you a stronger feel for the characters.

 Unforgiven: Vampires in America 7.5

War is imminent, and a spy has infiltrated Raphael’s estate. But his target is not Raphael; it’s his sister, Alexandra, whose earlier duplicity nearly cost Cyn her life. Raphael and Cyn are determined to play the spy’s game, traveling to Mexico to discover who their enemy is and just how far he’ll go to win. But once Raphael finds his sister, can he take the chance that she won’t betray him again?

**Deet’s Thoughts:

War is coming to the North American vampires. European Vampires are being crowded out of their territories and need to expand. Raphael is the vampire lord trying to keep the enemy at bay. At the same time there are those who would undermine him. Yes, there are allusions to previous incidents in earlier books but this is still a standalone book. 86 pages of hot vampire action, smoldering tension, and sizzling sex. The relationship of human Cyn and vampire Raphael is always super sensuous and loving and this novella once again shows their union to be one of trust and respect. Security chief, Juro, is becoming more of a presence in the series. (I’m hoping he gets his own territory.) Second in command, Jared, remains an enigma to me and apparently Cyn has reservations about him, too.

From the beginning of this series the author has kept true to the world she has built around these vampires. Also from the first book, where Raphael and Cyn are introduced, we have watched their relationship grow stronger.

 Compelled: Vampires in America 10.5

It was only a few months ago that Raphael lay helpless and dying, taken by treachery, while Cyn fought to save him. Unexpectedly, it was Nick who provided the key to his freedom. In exchange, he secured a promise that they would help him find and recover the same magical artifact that had been used to imprison Raphael. But when he calls on them to keep that promise, it will be Cyn who pays the price.

Torn between the two powerful men, struggling to keep them from killing each other, she undertakes a desperate search that will find her fighting for her life against a madman who wants her for himself.

**Deet’s Thoughts:

Once again, in the fabulous Vampires In America series, we are treated to our favorite lovers, human Cyn and vampire Raphael. This time they have sorcerer Nick Katsaros calling in a promise to help him find the magical Amber Manacles. Can Cyn keep Raphael and Nick from causing each other bodily harm? The power of Raphael bounces off the page. The mysterious Nick is more subtle and his power seems more controlled than Raphael. But then Raphael is jealous of Cyn’s past with Nick. I personally can’t get enough of Cyn and her vampire but this deeper introduction to Nick is putting him on my book boyfriend radar. Who wouldn’t want an ancient, all powerful, handsome as sin sorcerer? Well, hells bells, this guy is certainly no Dumbldore. And since Cyn is already totally occupied by Raphael that leaves Nick up for grabs and I call dibs.

I HIGHLY recommend this book of terrific novellas and the entire Vampires In America series for all Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy and Thriller readers. Start at the beginning. You won’t want to miss anything, and RAPHAEL (Book #1 in the Vampires In America Series) is currently only $2.51 on Amazon.

Flash back- Deet’s Fave Romantic Movies

( I posted this list back in 2011 but they are still favorites of mine and you may have missed them.  Try to find them on Amazon. You won’t be sorry)

This week, due to the lack of anything remotely interesting on TV, I have been watching my DVD’s of Jane Austen movies and BBC offerings  when I’m not reading.  I can’t get enough of these and I don’t even consider myself one of those obsessive Austen fans.  I love them!!!  I’m still not sure Mr Darcy is good enough for Lizzy, he is so morose.  And if Mr. Knightly had only confessed his love earlier it might have saved Emma from a bit of trouble.

There are other movies that are very romantic that perhaps you have not noticed.   All of these have been out a few years but are still available.

  1. LOST IN AUSTEN– A 21st century British bank teller, Amanda Price (played by Jemima Rooper), literally becomes lost in her favorite Austen book after finding a portal in her bathroom and swaps places with Lizzy Bennet. (witty, light drama)
  2.  THE OUTSIDER– This is more than a western.  Johnny Gault (Tim Daly) is a gunslinger who gets wounded and is cared for by beautiful settler (Played by Naomi Watts).  Who knew Daly was such a hunky guy?  In this he is drool worthy.(drama) Based on the book by Penelope Williamson.
  3. THE LAKE HOUSE- Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock fall in love through letters but they are in two different years.  She is in 2006 and he is in 2004. Can they ever meet?  What would happen if they tried?(drama)
  4. CONTINENTAL DIVIDE- John Belushi plays a reporter sent to the Rocky Mountains to interview a renowned nature scientist played by Blair Brown.  It’s a case of loathe at first sight which adds to the comedy and romance.  Who knew Belushi could play such a romantic character??(comedy)
  5. BLOOD & ChOCOLATE- This one feeds my paranormal craving.  It is a warewolf movie and very, very romantic.  Starring Agnes Bruckner, Hugh Dancy and my all time heartthrob Olivier Martinez.  This is not a comedy, it is a bit dark, but trust me it is a real goody.(drama)Based on the book by Annette Curtis Klause.

Recent Release Review- The Stone Warriors: Damian by D.B. Reynolds

Title: The Stone Warriors: Damian (Book#1)

Damian

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Author: D.B. Reynolds

Publisher: ImaJinn Books, June 15, 2016

Pages: 318

Rating: 5

Sexy Rating: 5

Description from Amazon.com

It was a time when gods walked the earth, when armies fought not for bits of land, but for the very existence of humanity. On such a battlefield, five formidable warriors stood against an evil greater than any the earth had ever seen. But evil is not an honorable foe. Betrayed by someone they trusted, the warriors were cursed, one by one, tossed into the maelstrom of time, imprisoned in stone, their freedom resting on nearly impossible conditions. Until . . .

Damian Stephanos honed his skills in battles fought with magic as much as swords. Caught by a deadly spell that left him trapped for centuries in darkness and obscurity, he is finally freed, only to discover that his enemy still lives. Determined to find him—and to free his brothers in arms—he first must fulfill his blood debt to the woman who released him from his torment. Unfortunately, being so close to this enticing female is another type of torment altogether . . .

Cassandra “Casey” Lewis is a hunter. Possessing the rare ability to sense magic, she spends most of her time shadowing arcane collectors, and more often than not, stealing the dangerous artifacts she pursues. Her job is risky, especially when she’s stealing from one of the most powerful sorcerers alive. But having a gorgeous warrior by her side is a definite bonus. He’s great in a fight . . . and in other places, too. Following a trail of dead bodies, the two of them must join forces to track down the sorcerer who cursed Damian, and who now plans to turn an ordinary magical device into a deadly weapon. Risking everything, including their hearts, they’re about to discover that trusting each other might be the hardest thing of all.

**

That description is spot-on so I’m not going to repeat it here.  Let me tell you about Damian; 6’5” tall and broad shoulders, “the face of a god”, dark eyes and long blond hair.  He is an ancient warrior that was cursed to be in a statue until a warrior woman freed him. Now let me tell you about that Kick-A$% warrior woman who freed him; Cassandra Lewis, 6’ tall, slim, athletic, long dark hair, possesses the ability to sense magic and very definitely a modern woman.

There is no shortage of action and violence in this book #1 of the new Stone Warriors series.  We start out with Casey being hunted by Hellhounds and running with a bullet in her shoulder. And that’s in the first few pages.  We have Damian coming to rescue and he demands she set him free.  Well you can guess how that turns out.  Stay glued to your E-Reader for some D.B. Reynolds’ trademark sizzling, scrumptious sexy scenes.  Casey’s boss Nick Katsaros, an ancient sorcerer that we have met briefly in previous books by Reynolds, pops in and out of the narrative never staying very long (my only complaint, since I LOVE Nick), but he is around to help the two warriors and aide in their mission. Let’s not leave out the evil, foul, wicked, malicious Sotiris, the arch enemy of Nick and also a supremely powerful sorcerer. Now if you think all this action takes place in some fantasy world you would be mistaken.  This is our world populated by vampires and now sorcerers and ancient warriors.  Didn’t know about them, did you? When Reynolds brings these beings to life you are convinced they are walking among us.

This book reads like an action film.  It has pulse pounding exploits, car chases, passionate kisses and Hellhounds. Really, you don’t want to miss this one.

Interview With-D.B. Reynolds, author

D.B. Reynolds picnew 2016 (1)

Welcome to La Deetda Reads, D.B., As my followers are well aware, I have been following your Vampires In America series since the first book and have been totally hooked and now I look forward to your Stone Warriors series and The SHIFTER PLANET series. I’m delighted you can join us today so we can get to know you even better.

  1. What (or who) inspired you to write the first VIA book RAPHAEL?RAPHAEL

I was working on another story, when a totally unrelated scene popped into my head. It was the scene that would become the opening scene of Raphael, and it was fully fleshed out, complete with the woman’s elaborate dress—the woman who would become Alexandra—the mood of the room, the piano, everything. But the key to the scene was when the petite woman says to her much larger captor, “He’ll kill you for this.” It was her complete certainty in whoever “he” was that made me want to write the book. I wanted to create a character who lived up to the woman’s confidence. And that character was Raphael.

2. Do you write from a plot outline (Plotter) or does your story unfold as you write (Pantzer)?

I write a fairly detailed outline, complete with really comprehensive character profiles. My books stay fairly true to the general outline, but I’m not wedded to it. I’m willing to take the characters in a different direction or introduce a new subplot if it fits as the story progresses.

3.Where do you write?

I do almost all of my writing in my home office, in the middle of the night, on my big comfortable chair, with Buffy on the TV, and the sound muted.

4.Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Honestly, as long as my pleasures don’t hurt anyone else, there’s nothing to feel guilty about. There are certain movies that I’ve watched over and over again, and they’re all action-adventure, and fairly violent. I love ice cream, and I always have some as a midnight snack when I’m writing. And then I climb on my elliptical to burn it off. Is the elliptical my favorite activity? Hell, no. Not even close! My favorite activity is reading. Some people can read and elliptical at the same time, but not me. I watch one of my movies or TV shows!

5. What is your favorite place to visit?

Oh, that’s a tough one. My darling husband and I have traveled all over the world, and seen some amazing cities and places. I love Paris, but then who doesn’t? It’s a beautiful city, with so much to offer. And I’d love to go back to Wales, maybe rent a cottage for six months and write a book. But probably my favorite place to visit is a beautiful hotel on the Pacific Ocean, with a room right on the sand so I can hear the waves and open the windows to the wonderful balmy air. And have nothing to do but sip tropical drinks, read a good book (or three) and sleep as long as I want.

6. What is your essential piece of kitchen equipment or gadget?

This is subject to change, and has been very different in the not so distant past, but right now, at this point in my life, my essential piece of kitchen equipment is the microwave!

7. What is your favorite way to relax?

Reading. Preferably curled up somewhere comfortable, with nothing on the schedule, and no place to be.

8. Your new series, The Stone Warriors, is debuting with the first book DAMIAN.  How many books are there to be in this series?  Will we have more of that hunky wizard, Nick, who has made an appearance in your novella, COMPELLED?

The series will be five books, one for each of the four warriors—beginning with DAMIAN—and then the final book for Nick. And, yes, Nick will appear in every book, because he’s the tie that binds all of the warriors together.

9.After DAMIAN, What comes next in the series and when can we expect it to release?

The second book in the series is teased at the end of DAMIAN (naturally!) It will be THE STONE WARRIORS: KATO, and features the second, and youngest, of Nick warriors, Kato Amadi. As for the release date, it looks like Summer 2017.

10. We are all excited about DAMIAN but those of us die-hard fans of the vampires want to know about the next book in the Vampires In America Series.

The next Vampires in America book will be LUCIFER, and will release in November 2016. Lucifer is a very powerful vampire, who possesses a unique ability that makes him a superb hunter. Put him a trail and he never misses his prey. But this time his prey isn’t a renegade vampire, it’s Colin Murphy, and it’s not a hunt, it’s a rescue.

Thanks for being with us today D.B.!

From Deet: You all know I’m a huge fan of this author and I’m waiting on pins and needles for this new series. There is no mention in this blurb of Nick Katsaros, the sorcerer from the Vampires in America series, and more recently the COMPELLED novella, but I’m hoping he makes an appearance.
