Description from Amazon.com:

When a December Nor’easter roars up the eastern seaboard, Jewell Cove cop Todd Ricker spends his day off being a Good Samaritan to stranded holiday travelers. But when the roads close and Todd can’t make his way home, he discovers that the Evergreen Inn is full up. Until another Good Samaritan opens her doors and offers him a place to stay…

Lainey Price is not looking forward to Christmas, but just because she’s not filled with the holiday spirit doesn’t mean she’s going to turn Todd out into the stormy night. Even if it means offering the handsome police officer the couch in her tiny cottage. But when the weather takes a turn for the worse, the two are snowed in for a wintry evening by the fire. With Christmas only a few days away, can Todd convince Lainey to open her heart to the season…and love?

**

This novella is short, sweet and perfect to read during the hectic holiday season.  The characters are surprisingly well fleshed-out for a novella.  There is not a slow build to the romance, the H and h are instantly attracted to each other.  The setting is made for romance; snowbound with a roaring fire….yes! Donna Alward gives us realistic dialog, breathless love scenes and lots of Christmasy feeling.

Christmasy Feeling: 3

Description from Amazon.com:

Crispin, the Duke of Hurst, has never met a woman he couldn’t handle–until he’s hit over the head with a basketful of mistletoe by a young lady who mistakes his intentions. When he gets into a tussle with her–and she can hold her own–Crispin knows he has finally met his match.

Miss Gwen Prim is mortified that she attacked a duke, but even more concerning is the way her resolve melts when she’s near him. She’s never felt this way about a London gentleman in her life. And with the magic of Christmas in the air, she may end up with a proposal she didn’t expect…

**

Yes, this had a bit of holiday feeling since mistletoe and holly were mentioned. Yes, there is a handsome Duke and a beautiful maiden. No, there is nothing new in this story and it is beyond predictable.  Am I just becoming jaded by so much of the same in HR? If you want a quick, simple read during the holidays this one is not badly written just more of the same.

Description from Amazon.com:

Previously published in the anthology Santa, Baby, HOT TOY is now available as a standalone e-story for the first time! Mayhem ensues under the mistletoe as a determined shopper grabs the very last hot toy action figure off the shelf, only to find herself plunged into the middle of a real-life spy game and in the arms of a sexy secret agent…

**

Unless you want to wake the entire household with your laughs, you better not read this at night in bed.  I nearly choked trying to stifle laughs as I read this at 11pm.  This is a mad-cap Christmas adventure with bad guys and good guys and….wait a minute, who is the bad guy and who is the good guy?  Jennifer Crusie can write humor that is not silly (hate that) but very witty.  Even though there is a lot of slap-stick scrambling it all plays well in this delight of a short story.  Yes, this is the perfect quick read for when the holidays are starting to get you down.

Review- A Lady’s Guide To Skirting Scandal: A Short Story by Kelly Bowen

Title:  A Lady’s Guide To Skirting Scandal: A Short Story (The Lords of Worth)

A Lady's Guide to skirting scandal

Genre: Historical romance

Author: Kelly Bowen

Publisher: Forever Yours, Aug 4, 2015

Pages: 90

Rating: 5

Sexy Rating: 5

Description from Amazon.com:

Lady Viola Hextall is bored – of the sea, her chaperones, and the woeful lack of available dukes on the ocean voyage from London to New York. Scrambling for any diversion short of jumping overboard, Viola strikes up a conversation with the ship’s rough-hewn, blue-eyed surgeon – and discovers an immediate cure for what ails her… To Nathaniel Shaw, Viola has the bearing of a lady and the spirit of an adventurer – an unlikely combination that he finds utterly irresistible. So he’s hoping to convince Viola to leave the stifling ballrooms of London high society behind because there is a big, wide world just waiting for them to explore – together.

**

We met Viola once before in an earlier book when she tried to compromise the Duke of Worth into marriage.  It was a failed attempt and Viola’s brother sent her packing on one of his ships to New York along with 2 irascible chaperones and a request of the ship’s surgeon, Nathaniel, to look out for her. Viola finds out she has an interest in medicine and Nathaniel finds out he has an interest in Viola.

This is a charming short story a lovely, sexy, quick read for an afternoon or evening.  Ms. Bowen does a superb job of bringing these characters to life in such a short piece.  This is part of a wonderful series and I highly recommend the series as well as this short story.

2 Thursdays ‘Til Christmas Review- Merry Christmas, Baby by Jill Shalvis

Merry Christmas Baby

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Holiday

Author: Jill Shalvis

Publisher: Forever Yours, Dec. 2014

Rating: 3.5

Sexy Rating: 5

Christmasy Feeling: 5

Description from Amazon.com:

SEASON’S KISSES . . . Wild child Chloe Thompson can’t believe how much things have changed. She still can’t get enough of her sexy husband Sawyer, but he seems to prefer working to impending fatherhood. So tonight, a very pregnant Chloe is escaping her troubles at the town Christmas party. Sheriff Sawyer Thompson hopes surprising Chloe at the party will give him a chance to set things right. But as the snow begins to fall and the wind rages, he wonders whether he can make it back in time. While mother nature conspires to keep Sawyer and Chloe apart, an unexpected arrival will require them to kiss and make up . . . and ring in the happiest holiday Lucky Harbor has ever seen.

**

This story will especially appeal to those who remember being in love and having your first child. Chloe is 8 months pregnant and she is having ups and downs from hormone retribution. Sawyer is trying to work extra jobs to build a room onto their house for the baby. They have been married 5 years and this baby is a total surprise. This is a story that will ring true to anyone who has been pregnant. Jill Shalvis has spun a tale that rings of reality so we can assume that Ms Shalvis has been there/done that.

This is a short story of 65 pages, during the holiday hustle and bustle it only takes an hour to escape with this heartwarming, humorous, sometimes sexy story. There is a good dose of Christmasy feeling thrown in for good measure.

Free on Kindle Today, Historical Story from Courtney Milan plus another

The Lady always Wins

Here is my review from March, 2012:

If I had a top ten author list Courtney Milan would be on it every time she published.  This is a short story about 60-70 pages long.  Now you might think that is not enough length to fully develop a love story.  You would be wrong.  At first we don’t know why Simon feels an urgency to marry in three days and we wonder why this particular woman.  As the story unfolds we are privy to their long standing love and regard, and the problems that hindered them in the past and that have come to hinder them again.  There are heartbreaking memories that make the reader long for the couple’s happiness.   The romance in this story is exquisite.  If you ever thought roses were the flower of love your mind will be changed, for the flower of this love is the tulip.

Holiday Erotica- All She Wants For XXX-Mas: An Erotic Christmas Story

Christmasy feeling: 4

Description from amazon.com:

Christie’s fresh off a breakup, and seems to be in for a lonely Christmas. But her new boss, Michael, is handsome, charming — and a total flirt.

Is Michael for real? Or is he just looking for a holiday fling? Either way, Christie might be getting more than just a kiss under the mistletoe…

Steamy office romance, witty dialogue, and a juicy plot. What more could you ask for this holiday season?

**

Christie seems to be a bit like a teenager in her lusting after her boss but I do believe she is supposed to be twenty something.  Michael seems like a take charge type which he exhibits by following up weeks of flirting with a surprise visit to Christie in the ladies room.  After their work place encounter these two were an item. Since it was a volunteer organization I guess there was no worry about a sex harassment lawsuit.

In a short story such as this it is difficult to create the romantic sexual tension that is needed to make it totally satisfying.  Just telling us that she is lusting after him and he …well he just shows up in the ladies room.  In their subsequent encounters he seems rather violent but perhaps he just likes rough sex.  We are left to ponder this as it isn’t elaborated upon.

For me, this was just an okay read.  The sex was more graphic than romantic the way I like to read it. The heroine was a bit immature and a bit slutty and I wished she had owned up to both.  The hero was an enigma, I couldn’t quite decide where he was coming from.  I recommend this story to those who want to read some light erotica.  No chains and whips here.
