He just needs to get her alone to unleash the promised passion he sees within his virgin fiancée. Armed with this knowledge, he will use any tool in his arsenal to exploit her weakness. In short, he’ll just have to ruin her!

***

I am a fan of Victoria Vane.  Her Historical Romances are my favorites and this short novella is no exception.  In signature steamy prose the author has given us a look at a sweet heroine who has reached her limit of understanding and a rather self-absorbed hero who his getting his comeuppance. That the author can bring to life these well-constructed characters in such a short book is to her credit. She also introduces us to Mariah and Nick, the protagonists in the next book in the series, A PLEDGE OF PASSION. I recommend this book to all romance readers.

Description from Amazon.com:

WILD HORSES COULDN’T BRING THEM TOGETHER… With exceptional talent and looks, cowboy “horse whisperer” Keith Russo once had the world at his feet – until his career was unwittingly destroyed by an aspiring filmmaker. After being rejected by his family for exploiting his Native American heritage, Keith has no choice but to turn back to his humble beginnings as a wild horse wrangler.

BUT MAYBE THEIR PASSION CAN… Miranda Sutton always dreamed of making films, until wild mustangs captured her heart. But turning her grandmother’s Montana ranch into a wild horse sanctuary proves harder than she thought. She needs someone who knows wild horses. Keith and the mustangs need each other. And while working together to save the herd, Keith and Miranda discover a passion as wild as the mustangs they love.

**

Victoria Vane has given us an insightful look into wild horses of the west.  She interweaves fascinating information about horse gatherings, Native American culture and ranching with a very intense, sizzling romance between skillfully fleshed out characters.  As in other books of this series she delves into a topic and does not rest until she explores all areas of research until she can present us with a totally immersive experience.

I highly recommend this book to those who love a fascinating romance read as well as those who love horses.

Hot Cowboy Nights Series: Each is a standalone novel.

Description from Amazon.com:

Only a madman makes a promise in the heat of passion… During a midnight tryst in a moonlit garden, Nicolas Needham fell in love—only to walk away. As a younger son with few connections, his pride demanded that he better his circumstances before paying his suit to Lady Mariah. When Nicolas is finally given the opportunity he needs to advance—by negotiating a contract of matrimony on his employer’s behalf—he is shocked to learn that the intended bride is the same woman to whom he once pledged himself. And only a fool believes him…. Mariah Morehaven has lived a quiet, almost reclusive life in the country. While she accepts that marriage is her unavoidable destiny, as a baroness in her own right, and heir to one of the oldest and land-rich estates in England, she fears becoming the target of fortune hunters. After entrusting her cousin, Lydia, to help her find a suitable match, Mariah is devastated to discover that the man sent to negotiate for her hand is the very same who broke her heart.

**

What’s a woman to do when she pledges to wait for a man and then he backs out at the last minute?  Well, Mariah plans to marry an eligible gentleman, that is if her heart ever spots breaking over Nick. Nick has caused Mariah no end of heartbreak and that alone made me not very fond of him. He was putting his career above his love for Mariah, and although well intentioned, I couldn’t help thinking he was making a mistake.

Victoria Vane has given us another well written, steamy book.  This is a quick read, only 199 pages so it can be finished in one day which I’m sure you may put all calls on voicemail so you can keep reading.  It is predictable and I did want for some greater tension but it is still a good story.  I’m a fan of this author since she can write interesting Historical Romances as well as Contemporary.  This one I can recommend for a quick, light read that will take you back to the glorious 1800’s where men thought of being honorable and ladies wanted honorable men.

Deet’s note: Ladies still want honorable men but I’m not so sure the men hold this value as highly as the women. Just my personal observation. Maybe I’m wrong.  What do you think?

Description from Amazon.com:

She gave him a chance to bury his past… but the price would be his heart Burdened by the past…Orphaned at a young age and left to run wild, at eighteen Julian Price joins the fight against Napoleon in the hope of attaining honor. Devastated when his best friend, Thomas, is killed in battle, Julian returns home burdened with guilt, only to find his wastrel uncle has squandered his inheritance. Desperate to live her own life… Facing a bleak future caring for her aging mother and raising her brother’s children, Henrietta Houghton believes her chance at a real life died with Thomas, the only man who ever wanted her. But Henrietta is still full of dreams. When her wealthy aunt offers her a gift of ten thousand pounds, Henrietta finally has the chance to choose her own destiny. Everything has a price…With a fortune at her command, Henrietta offers Julian a marriage of convenience, unaware that she really offers Julian a means of salvation—not just his fortune, but his very soul.

**

This book was a delight.  Henrietta is a heroine that we all can love.  She is intelligent and forthright.  She grasps the problem and seeks a solution.  Well, her notorious Aunt helps the solution along. Julian is Henrietta’s childhood friend.  He thought of her as a pal for those formative years until one day she started maturing and she was no longer allowed to cavort with her twin brother Henry and friends Julian and Thomas.  Julian went off to war and came back to find his uncle had squandered his fortune.  Now in debt and troubled by the war Julian feels his only recourse is to become a mercenary soldier. Henrietta has other ideas.

This is a lovely story of a woman who knows what she wants and a man who is not too obtuse to grasp the carrot when it is dangled.  The romance was always there and it is wonderful to see how the characters discover it.

This is a short book, only 197 pages, so it is a quick and most satisfying read.  Highly recommend

And the attraction can’t be denied—especially the more closely Ty and Monica have to work together. Some odds are just meant to be played, and with chemistry this electric, it may be time to grab life by the horns…

**

I do love Victoria Vane’s romance books, both contemporary and historical.  She can delve into a time period or setting and bring it to life as she has brought the hotel real estate world to life in this book.  She sets a scene and we are immediately transported to Las Vegas.  Her characters, in this case Ty and Monica are well developed and their backgrounds fleshed out so that we are always aware of their motivation.  This is not my favorite of Ms. Vane’s books.  Monica was angry or grumpy and Ty also.  They had angry sex most of the time.  This also ends on a cliffhanger.  There was no HEA in this book.

TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT, COWBOY…

Weary warrior… After eight years as a Marine sniper, war-scarred Reid Everett is back in his native Wyoming. He knows and loves this rugged land, so working for wildlife services to reduce the booming wolf population suits him to a T.

Caring crusader… Wildlife biologist Haley Cooper is desperate to make a difference. Leaving the world of academia behind, she accepts a position as a wolf advocate to protect the animals she loves.

Raw attraction… Their jobs set them on a collision course, but chemistry sparks like wildfire between Reid and Haley. They’ll have to brave some rough territory if they hope to reconcile their polarizing views with a passion that won’t be denied.

**

Throughout this series there has been a welcome side element introduced that goes beyond the expected romance. In SLOW HAND I learned about ranching in the west, in ROUGH RIDER I learned all about the workings of the rodeo circuit. In this offering Ms. Vane gives us some valuable lessons both pro and con of wildlife management, wolves in particular. I am really enjoying my romance novel with a side of fascinating lessons.

This the third book in the Hot Cowboy Nights series is a standalone novel. I did think it was more in the “military romance” genre because we didn’t get to the ranch until about 2/3 of the way through the book. Reid was a noble hero, he was a good guy who in my opinion fell for the wrong woman. Haley was annoying from the beginning with her incessant fanaticism and her total inability to see anyone’s point of view that might differ from her narrow focus. I kept wondering throughout what Reid saw in her.

Not liking the heroine does put a bit of a damper on my opinion but I have to say that Victoria Vane does write a good book. There is action, sexy encounters and a very slow build romance, coming to terms with love. Add in the lessons about the pros and cons of wolf management and this is a really good read.

Description from Amazon.com:

In rural Montana… Wade Knowlton is a hardworking lawyer who’s torn between his small-town Montana law practice and a struggling family ranch. He’s on the brink of exhaustion from trying to save everybody and everything, when gorgeous Nicole Powell walks into his office. She’s a damsel in distress and the breath of fresh air he needs.

Even the lawyers wear boots… Nicole Powell is a sassy Southern girl who has officially sworn off cowboys after a spate of bad seeds-until her father’s death sends her to Montana and into the arms of a man who seems too good to be true. Her instincts tell her to high tail it out of Montana, but she can’t resist a cowboy with a slow hand…

**

If you have read any of Victoria Vane’s historical romances then you know you are in for a sizzling, sexy treat when it comes to this story. Nicky is emotionally drained by a past that has her abandoned by her father and having a mother who gave her little attention. The attention she gleaned from her romantic encounters was not the kind that produced a feeling of trust and stability. When she meets Wade, who is struck with love-at-first-sight, she doesn’t’ trust what is happening between them.

Of course there will be a happy ending, after all this is a romance novel. How an author gets us to the predictable end is not always an interesting journey. In this case it is full of surprises and very satisfying. Ms. Vane knows her Montana ranching and what it takes to settle an estate so that the entire book seems packed with reality. The sexual tension is so intense as to be quite a relief when the H/h finally manage to connect.

I enjoyed this book on several levels: the feeling of the Montana landscape and the problems facing a rancher, the hot-as-hell attraction between the protagonists and the sense of reading a true life story. I look forward to more cowboys from Victoria Vane.

Description from Amazon.com:

Two wary hearts … Janice Combes has two loves, bucking bulls and Dirk Knowlton. But Dirk only has eyes for a dazzling rodeo queen. How can Janice ever compete while mired ankle-deep in manure? Exchanging playful banter with Dirk is all Janice can expect-until the stormy night he knocks on her door dripping wet and needing a place to crash.

Different Dreams… Dirk Knowlton is living the cowboy dream. Life should be good-roping, branding, backing broncs, riding bulls, but there’s a void he can’t seem to fill. After getting hung up by a bull, he wonders if this is really the life he wants. Restless and rebellious, he bolts…but there’s a certain cowgirl he can’t forget.

When a battle-scarred Dirk returns to his Montana ranch he’s determined to hang on at any cost. Janice has come back home to lick her own wounds. When old dreams turn to dust, can two wary hearts take another chance on love?

**

Leave it to Victoria Vane to introduce this eastern seaboard girl (me) to the life of rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. I was totally enthralled with the workings of the rodeo and the lives of the rodeo people. She brought to life this world that I only remember from a childhood visit to Madison Square Garden in NYC when I was just a kid. But beyond the vivid atmosphere of the rodeo world there is a story of a guy who makes some very bad decisions and a woman who hangs on to her love even when it looks like it will never mean a relationship.

I didn’t always like Dirk. He was so stubborn in his thinking that it was rather annoying. I wanted to tell Janice to “snap out of it” and move on with her life since Dirk really did look like a dead-end. But when she did attempt to move on it also looked like a bad move. Could these two ever make a solid relationship? To be perfectly honest I didn’t think it could happen.

This is a really good book and if you have never read a western romance then you are really in for a treat. This is the second book in the series, it is a standalone but do read Victoria Vane’s SLOW HAND about Dirk’s brother Wade.

Excerpt from ROUGH RIDER by Victoria Vane:

He looked abashed. “We didn’t just have to leave the party, we got kicked out of the hotel too.”

“Evicted from your room?”

“Yup. And there aren’t any others available in all of Casper.”

“I know,” she said. “It’s why I’m camped out here.” She paused to digest what he’d left unsaid. “So you and Rachel?”

He shook his head with a scowl “We’re done now. Quits.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Nope. History. Case closed.”

“It’ll blow over.”

“Don’t think so. It was her idea to boot us. Said she didn’t give a shit if I had a room tonight or not. Then I couldn’t even try finding anything outside of town because my asshole brother took my keys so I wouldn’t drive. My next move was to pilfer a blanket and pillow and camp out under the stars in my truck bed, but then it started pouring on me.”

“So you came here. How’d you do that with no wheels?”

“Walked.”

“Three miles in the pouring rain? No wonder you look like something the cat dragged in.”

“Can I crash for a coupla hours? Maybe just camp out in the back seat of your dually? All I need is to get warm and dry again.”

Janice’s mouth went dry as sawdust. Dirk Knowlton. Cold. Wet. Here. Now. Wanting a bed? She’d give her right arm to warm him up. Heck yeah.

Misreading her silence he mumbled a curse. “Sorry, Janice. It’s my damned head. I’m not thinkin’ right. It’s still throbbing like hell. Haven’t been myself all night. M’pologies for being such a dumb-ass and imposing on you—” He turned to the door.

“No! Wait. It’s not that.” She grabbed his sleeve. “I was just thinking of your injuries. You don’t need to make matters worse by sleeping all cramped up in the truck.” She gnawed her lower lip and then blurted. “Y-you wanna just stay here instead?”

“Here? That’s mighty generous but there isn’t a whole lot of room for both of us.” He glanced up at the gooseneck with a frown. “If you’ll just gimme a blanket, I’ll take the floor.”

“You don’t need to do that,” she said. “The bench here flips down over the table and converts into a single. It’s really narrow and not very comfortable, but still better than the truck. Warmer anyway. Besides you need to get dry.”

“You sure about this?” he asked.

“Yeah.” She smiled. “What are friends for? I’m sure I’ve got a shirt for you too.”

“Thanks, Red. That would be great.”

Red? The single syllable rippled warm and tingly, all the way to her toes. He followed up with a lopsided grin that stopped her in her tracks. She turned to the small cabinet that served a dual function as dresser and closet and shut her eyes on a sigh—but the same air stuck in her throat the minute she turned back around.

He’d shed the denim jacket. And the black tee. His bare torso with well-developed pecs and a mouthwatering six pack greeted her. He was drying his face with his discarded shirt. Janice tore her gaze away and cleared her throat. “Here.” She thrust an extra-large Dixie Chicks T-shirt into his hands, a souvenir from their Top of the World Tour. “I—I can get you a towel too.”

He eyed the shirt skeptically. “No thanks.”

“What? You don’t like female musicians?”

“Don’t like their politics. Natalie should just shut up and sing.”

“Ah.” She nodded slowly. The shirt was from the tour that caused the “incident.” A lot of her friends had since thrown out their Dixie Chicks CDs, but Janice still loved their music. “I Can Love You Better” was her favorite. The lyrics, she’s got you wrapped up in her satin and lace. Tied around her little finger…but I can love you better, perfectly summed up all the heartbreak and frustrations of unrequited love; all her secret feelings for Dirk. She only wished she could show him now that he was here. In the flesh. A big strong, blue-lipped and teeth-chattering fantasy come true.
