Description from amazon.com:

It is 1803, six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy’s magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy’s sister Georgiana. And preparations are under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball.

Then, on the eve of the ball, the patrician idyll is shattered. A coach careens up the drive carrying Lydia, Elizabeth’s disgraced sister, who with her husband, the very dubious Wickham, has been banned from Pemberley. She stumbles out of the carriage, hysterical, shrieking that Wickham has been murdered. With shocking suddenness, Pemberley is plunged into a frightening mystery.

I have to confess that I Did Not Finish(DNF) this book.  I read about 2/3 and could not care whodunit or care to find out any other revelations.  The writing is so achingly slow that sleep threatens to engulf the reader.  For those who are not familiar with the Pride and Prejudice plot of Jane Austin, Ms James does give more than adequate background.

I too tried one of those continuations of P&P. Sadly it was a DNF for me too. I think maybe authors should leave the classics alone. Come up with your own ideas. I’m sure there are many people who will disagree but that’s my opinion. P&P is a perfect book IMO and you can’t improve perfection.

    • I have certainly had my fill of bad P&P take-offs, but (you knew there was a “but” coming) I fell in love with Jennifer Becton’s continuation of Charlotte Lucas and Caroline Bingley. Those books were great.

  2. Masterpiece Theater on PBS is going to air this story in 2014. I will watch and perhaps like the show better than the book.
